Description Now I have for you a traffic signal head with four beacons, the very bottom one containing a left-turn arrow. Now unlike what I previously provided, the 5-beacon signal heads, willm3luvtrains.deviantart.com… and willm3luvtrains.deviantart.com… this only comes with one arrow.

With this traffic signal, the green arrow appears at the same time as the full red light. But then the green arrow turns into a yellow arrow! Seems impossible, but that's how some traffic signals work. In fact, there are some traffic signals like that down in Sierra Vista, Arizona, like this one on Fry Boulevard and Lenzner Avenue www.google.com/maps/@31.554674…

What I am having trouble understanding is how can the arrow be green and yellow, especially if it's an incandescent light (L.E.D.s I think I can understand.) I think there are two light bulbs inside the traffic signal beacon housing, one yellow, one green. Don't quote me on that, I could be dead wrong about that! I also used to think that there were rotating lights inside the housing, but I don't think that's true either. So how can one light by itself be green and yet yellow? Either you can tell me if you know (please) or I'll look into it because that is amazing. Now L.E.D.s can change colors but I'm talking about the old incandescent form, which involves only one light, or one light bulb.

5 seconds for Red, Full Green and Green Arrow and 3 seconds for Full Yellow and Yellow Arrow. I have another one with a delayed green arrow willm3luvtrains.deviantart.com… .

Made with gifmake.com/ Please feel free to use but please give me credit for this. Thanks for looking and hope you like it!

I'm used to see traffic lights with dual-color arrows like this since they are common in my region, although recently the traffic engineers seem to prefer installing traffic signals with a separate section for the yellow arrow. Do you really think Americans who grew up in neighborhoods where traffic lights in dog-house formation are common would get wierded-out when they see signals with dual-color arrows?

Probably. At least a few people would, others I'm sure probably wouldn't notice or care.

With me used to seeing traffic signals with three beacons at an early age, I would wonder what the fourth beacon was for (now I know, at least the arrow part.) I probably would have been weirded out too.

I too prefer a separate beacon for yellow rather than bi-color it, but that's just me.

We also have flashing yellow right-turn arrows, and I'm considering doing animated gifs of that.

Are these flashing yellow arrows you're mentioning on the same signal heads as signals for through movements or on separate heads for right-turn movements?

They are on the same signal heads as the signals for through movement.

This is an example but not a good example because there's no flashing yellow light showing and I don't know where else to find one. www.google.com/maps/place/N+Cr… This is on Grant Road and Craycroft Road, but this is one of the intersections that has flashing yellow right-turn arrows.

See the 5-beacon signal head on the right? The bottom two beacons are a flashing yellow light and right above it is a solid yellow right-turn arrow. The five beacon signal head on the overhead arm has left turn arrows (one green, one steady yellow).

I couldn't find any pictures of the right turn arrows used in Tucson but I was able to find this article tucson.com/news/local/govt-and…
