Your UI theme is really nice...
A way better than the current Ubuntu theme.
Your work could easily make me switch on Linux (^_^). No, seriously, amazing work. It should be developped for any mainstream OS on the market.

If Ubuntu looked like this, had codecs installed right out of the box, and relied a little less on the Terminal, I'd use it everyday.

The wallpaper image is probably Dark Wood ( [link] ) with brown color added.

If you take the darkwood image and open it up in The Gimp, Colors -> Adjust Color Balance, and make the image Magenta -62 and Yellow -75, you should get something quite close and quite beautiful.

In fact, It's what I'm going to use as my wallpaper.

what i really loved most was the ease colors used in the gtk style, all along side with the icons, wallpaper etc.. when, (or if) will you release this ?

hcalves [2008-08-06 18:36:53 +0000 UTC]

It does look good, but this is just an OS X rip-off. What you think in coming up with a complete proposal, on how it should look AND behave (e.g., is dock usable? is those screenlets on the desktop usable? or you added just because other OSes have those?). Try to think outside the box, everyone today appears to be wanting mimic OS X, so they get one "for free".

Absolutely awesome. The only thing I'd pick up on is that the menu finishes too soon after the last tiem - this could do with some extension (say another 2 or 3 pixels on your design above).

Slightly concerned that it seems to mimic OS X a little too much.

ziroday In reply to ??? [2008-08-05 08:25:48 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely love the mockups, a great idea that can actually be put into practice.

The wallpaper looks to me to be from Dark Wood by ~zygat3r ([link] ) but they're all in black and white. Did you add the brown yourself?

Have talked to the gnome-do authors about turning theme into a reality, which is but a new front end will have to be written which should not be too hard

Which icon theme are you using for the dock?

The mockups are one of the best themes I have ever seen for any OS. I wish Vista looked this comfortable.

billgoldbergmania [2008-08-04 14:12:09 +0000 UTC]

The panel color and the menu's color doesn't fit.

Ubuntu will never come with a dock.

I prefer the alt+f2 application (forgot it's name) instead of gnome-do.

And screenlets will also don't make it on the default install.

weakhead [2008-08-04 12:59:37 +0000 UTC]

Nice mockup. However, have you ever seen such varied theme in Gnome? To make such, you must first have conditions to create it, and Gnome doesn't give it to users. This is not Ubuntu team job to something, that Gnome won't allow them to, but Gnome's to work on better way of using GTK.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hcalves In reply to weakhead [2008-08-06 18:41:47 +0000 UTC]

Everything in that screenshot can be done with today software (Gtk+ pixmap theme, Gnome-Do, AWN, Screenlets).

The question is: is it usable? Is it easy on the eyes, makes the screen more readable, improves user feedback? Or on the technical side, will the theme work with non Gtk+ apps that people rely on everyday (Firefox, OpenOffice, Amarok, etc.)?

A mockup is a very good place to start, but UI design is more than doing a pretty screen.
