Description EDIT 3: 11/22/09 You guys are kidding me XD For goodness sakes, reaaaaad the liink here: [link] Every time I get a comment that reads "the one on the left is a Mary Sue because she has green hair and a power," I realize that they're not reading the description which contains this link: [link]

tl;dr: If 'special' traits fit in with the universe, it doesn't automatically make the character a Mary Sue. What if everyone else in Ami Machida's universe has green/blue/purple hair? What if everyone else has a cat power? Does that make her a Mary Sue? Not necessarily.

Please, spare me the time from having to point you BACK to the silly description and just take a minute to read the link. You know, the one I linked to a bunch of times up above. And the link here: [link]

EDIT 2: 10/11/09 I suppose this is long overdue, but for those of you with confusion, here is an explanation on why I perceive the one on the left as not a Mary Sue: [link] For the love of god stop whining about it D:

EDIT: 6/21/09 Okay, everyone, please chill with all the 'hay is my character a mary-sue!?11" questions. I get about 3 a day now and one thing you need to understand - I AM NOT AN AUTHORITY ON MARY SUES. This picture is a parody. Just for fun. The one on the right is obviously an extreme exaggeration of a stereotype and not the definitive definition for a Mary Sue. D:

Please full view. You won't be able to read the text if you don't.

For those of you who don't know, a Mary Sue, in a nutshell, is a fanmade character that is usually extremely beautiful, powerful, smart, talented, and in plain words, perfect in every way.

These characters tend to be quite a bother in fanfiction and role playing, since they simply can't be beat, and thus become boring.

Have any of you ever been rping, and come across a character who is like, " oh, well, that planet in the way isn't a problem *blows it up*"

Or, is like, "well, Vegeta and Goten and Trunks and Goku ALL have a crush on my character"

Yep. That's a Mary Sue.

So, for people who still don't understand, I made this little picture/diagram. Usually, Mary Sues have TONS of talents and TONS of powers, and no weaknesses.

Enjoy ^_^

What do you think of RPG admins whoΒ call your characterΒ Overpowered or a Mary Sue, yet when you see their character apps,Β theirs are the veryΒ Overpowered or Mary SueΒ types they calledΒ yours?

For a past project, I made a Mary Sue character on purpose. Yes, she had every skill, was good at everything, everyone loved her, she was the absolute best..... because she's an RPG character who's been through New Game+ modes over and over and over again and was able to take all of her past skills with her into new games (the twist was her memories would be reset with each new game, it was complicated and I'm simplifying). I do my best to make my characters people, which I hope keeps them from being Sues. I guess that's up to my audience to decide in the end, right?

Claims and cries to much are not really seen as actual character flaws. I get it's a diagram at what Isn't a Mary sue but the first one gives off a bit of a Mary Sue traits as well.

Anyway still good start.

Rather than simply complaining about Mary Sues and Mary Sue Creators or brag about how my (Current) Characters aren't Mary Sues I would like to put forth the hypothesis that this may stem from an early adolescent way of viewing life as a zero-sum game, when you are young and hormonal and constantly worried about your popularity you make your character good at everything because in your mind its either 'I'm everything or I'm nothing' I know this isn't the mindset of every adolescent But it is my belief on the mindset behind the Mary Sue

Here are a video I really like than can help clarify things even better

personally, i honestly find the second a more enjoyable character, even though she's pretty much a textbook definition of a mary sue. personally i think that mary sues aren't always boring characters, just difficult to fit in a narrative due to their overpowered nature.

It's the majority of author's-insert characters.

the one on the left looks like a generic 'kawaii xDDD anime" while the one of the right actually looks somewhat interesting, granted, you need to remove all the animals and make her a believable character

aesthetically, the second one is better
the first one just seems to be a mish mash of colorsΒ

Definitely. Writing good characters is work. Especially if the character seems boring on the outset. But it can be done. I mean who would have thought that a bunch of half sized hairy footed people from the countryside could be the central characters of an epic fantasy?
