Description This is a gamut mask painting experiment.  What's that?  Check out my blog post showing my process for this, as well as details of my practice - featherseeds.blogspot.com/2015…

I'm trying to re-teach myself color, because the more I paint, read, and talk to other artists, the more I realize I don't understand color at all :d

Acrylic on matboard, about 6X9 inches. Referenced from a red-tailed hawk named Patrick.

Based on what I've seen of your work maybe it's just that you have a different understanding of color and they can't see color the way that you do - genius has a way of seeing the world differently. I hope you don't change the way you do color significantly because it is already magnificent.

Interestingly, if you use a gamut mask, it limits the colors you're allowed to use and really simplifies color It takes the guesswork out of whether or not a color will work with another, since it limits you to a certain section of the color wheel.

While this is a very beautiful painting, and very photo-realistic, I find nothing wrong with using more full-saturation colors in your work.  I think it is always good to learn a new technique, and branch out as an artist.  It is the only way you can grow and improve with your art.  However, everyone needs to develop their own style, rather than just painting like everyone else.  It is what makes each individual artist's works stand out.  I would not call your use of more full saturation color a bad habit or mistake, and I feel that your use of color in your older works was what made them so beautiful and unique.

I appreciate your kind words I'm not trying to label all my previous work as 'bad', but I feel I'm never quite able to achieve the end result I'm striving for, and I think it's because I go the jewel-tone route instead of focusing on better color harmony. I certainly won't abandon using saturated colors, but I feel it's important to also understand how to use color in a more subdued way, which in the end will allow me to make what colors I do use really pop.

I agree.  I use super saturated full-rainbow colors in many of my drawings, on purpose.  I really like those drawings, but I also am trying to broaden my horizon a little bit by practicing realism more and more.  I know I need to work on anatomy and composition.  I feel like this will help me to continue to grow as an artist, and also add some diversity to my portfolio.  I actually really appreciate the article you wrote on using a Gamut mask, and I would like to try that technique in the future.  I never went to art school, and I find online tutorials such as these to be extremely helpful.

I would highly recommend picking up a copy of James Gurney's "Color and Light" if you can - the way he explains color and the science behind color is extremely helpful. He explains the use of gamut masks much better than I!

For someone who claims not to understand color at all, you do an amazing job with your art.

Thanks! There's a lot I need to work on with my color, and I use certain bad color habits a lot, which takes away from the overall success of a painting.
