Nice work! I feel you certainly had a vision in mind when creating this piece and stuck with it! There is a great sense of distance between the foreground and the background, and the altered colours give off a magical vibe. Paying attention to the small details in the environment such as the fireflies, and the ripples and mist on the water help tie the atmosphere together! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

The Back Ground | I think you did a nice job with the scenery! I like how you strayed from the familiar green-grass-blue-sky and went with the cooler tones of the colour wheel! The texture differences are in good contrast to each other and help clearly define each element from the next. The one thing I don’t like about the backdrop is the strange greyish cloud puffs – they really don’t fit in with regards to colour or shape. Due to these clouds in particular not having much shading, it’s hard for the viewer to understand where they are in space. My suggestion would to be remove the three clusters of them or repaint them so they match the rest of the clouds (which look amazing!).

Staging | This is a minor thing, but in regards to the staging of the image, the right side appears to be “dead space”. The character (the focal point) is located in the left/center of the drawing and looking to the left. Viewers will gravitate towards the subject’s eye and follow it. Due to the image cutting off, there is no where for the viewers to “go”, which leaves the right “unexplored”. There are lots of resources and pointers available online that can elaborate further on “the rule of thirds” and “eye direction” that I think would be of use in future works.

The Character | There are three things I’ll touch on with the character. The first thing that jumps out at me is the awkward shading choices – the scales of the throat and underbelly in particular. Looking at the environment, the light source seems to come from the top left of the image, but it appears the dragon is being lit from underneath exclusively on the ventral scales. If the dragon’s ventral scales were meant to be bioluminescent, then a blueish glow of the same hue should be present on the ground below and on the limbs where appropriate.
Secondly, I feel the membrane of the wings could use a hint of a shadow. Yes, they are translucent, but not transparent, meaning they still catch some light and shadow. I would extend the shading you currently have on the fingers and lightly brush some onto the wing flaps so it appears the two are more unified (think of the flow of bone to wing rather than a window pane to its casing).
Lastly, the top of the wings are doing a thing called “twinning” – they are similar to the point of the eye recognizing this, and finding it visually boring. Normally, in a relaxed pose like this I don’t think it would be too much of a problem, but it appears that the wrist of the dragon’s left wing is elevated and on a different angle than that of the right, which should result in an altered slant and some varied flexing of the fingers.

--

Overall, I think you made a great effort and a pretty piece of artwork!
Hope my observations help going forward!
Keep drawing! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

Whoa that's a long critique! Thank you!

About the clouds - they have been bugging me as well but in the end I simply forgot to fix them I guess xD
I usually do pay attention to the ... eye direction thing? Not sure what to call it. :'D
When I originally planned the drawing I didn't think I'd add such a big character. The size that this was planned to be for can be seen in the over version I did:
I think that version one is bit more balanced than this one as there are many shapes that 'point' towards the character more.

As for the character - yes those are bioluminescent scales. I actually did put some of the light from the scales on the ground beneath them but I do agree that I could have put some on the limbs as well. Same with the wings, I agree with you. They are originally meant to be the same hue everywhere so them being lighter towards the top is a (kinda poor xD) shading attempt.
The main problem I had with this character is that it was very complex and had many details so that I had to cut some parts down a bit to stay within the 25€ budget. :'D

Overall, this thing is absolutely stunning. The colors go together wonderfully, and I can tell that you put so much love and detail into the foreground, the midground, and the clouds! I wish I could do backgrounds like this <3. I do have a couple problems with it though, and it's mostly with the character. I am aware that this is a ych, and the customer probably picked the background themselves from several others. But the dragon is rather hard to see over that grass! I'm not sure if you could have made the grass underneath lighter, or the character lighter. But one easy fix you could do in situations like this could be to add some soft glow and highlights. you already have a coulpe of fireflies in this scene, so if you wanted to you could add some lighting effects near the feet on another layer. Maybe luminosity or something. Then it might give the feet a bit more contrast from the ground. Anyways I thought this was really pretty and I hope you keep drawing, bc you're really good at it!!

Thank you very much for the critique! I actually consciously tried to blend the character into the background a little bit (because it is a rather dark environment) to make things look more natural. Had I put a bit more work into this I would have defined the legs more to make them a bit more clear through rim light, like you suggested.
Thank you again! <3 I will definitely keep drawing as long as I can afford it ^^

My stuff is all more on the cartoony side, so i start with lineart and go from there. I love the effect of not using them, thought. Its a beautiful painting. Also, what program do you use? I've got medibang paint, but i like the look of those brushes

WindSwirl In reply to ARDrawsStuff [2018-10-21 23:41:10 +0000 UTC]

Well, you can see how I do it if you watch the video that's linked in the description. ^^
I use Clip Studio Paint. It's quite nice ... If I should recommend a free to use program with many brush options it would probably be Krita. I find it a bit annoying to use, personally but that's just because I'm not used to it xD
It's a very good program overall that even has a great animation feature.

I did watch it, is why i was curious . I do also have Krita, I'm just so used to Medibang paint i just use it for some stuff. i couldnt believe it when i found out though, i've been trying to animate with camtasia and timing is a jerk. XD Thank you for being patient with me.
