Description
A birthday drawing for my brother, who was born on December 7, the same day as the Pearl Harbor attacks. The inscription on the bomb, readable top to bottom, right to left, is the Japanese equivalent of "Happy Birthday".
Before anyone gets upset at my apparent lack of respect for those killed during this battle, let me point it out that messages scribbled on projectiles are commonplace during times of warfare, and, as far as this time-honored tradition goes, "Happy Birthday" has been used before and it's pretty benign by comparison: datacide.c8.com/bomb-graffiti/
On the other hand, linking our respective birth dates with various calamities is a cherished tradition amid my siblings and I, with my little brother currently holding the record - not only does his birth date coincide with the Attack on Pearl Harbor, but also with the Spitak Earthquake that killed over 25,000 people in Armenia, on the very day he was born - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spitak_E… .
Then again, my own birthday can be linked to the 1991 Bangladesh cyclone whose victims numbered at least 138,000...
Moving back to the drawing, the ships are recognizable as the USS Arizona alongside the repair ship USS Vestal. The bomb is a standard Japanese Type 99 armor piercing (no it bloody isn't, look at the "later edit" below), and it's not the the cause of the cataclysmic explosion that ripped through the forward part of the ship at 8:06, but the earlier 8:00 AM hit near the #4 turret, that caused minimal damage.
I chose not to draw any people in this piece because I wanted to make a connection to the event, not the actual loss of life.
LATER EDIT: I just realized that on December 7, Arizona was moored the other way around in relation to the Vestal, that is to say with her bow facing to the right of this picture. Oh well...
EVEN LATER EDIT, January 2016: It now appears the reference I used for the bomb was also wrong - the bomb I drew is in fact the 250kg "Type 98 No.25 Land Bomb" which was used in the attack, but by the planes bombing the airfields, not the ones attacking Battleship Row.
For comparison purposes, here is what an actual 800kg "Type 99 Number 80 Mark 5 Bomb" looks like.
Welp, it's official. Nothing about this drawing is remotely correct. Maybe I should redo it?

Yes.
In Tokyo it was December 8, 3:18 AM and all the pilots and sailors of the Kidō Butai had their watches set to Tokyo time, but the local time in Hawaii was December 7, 7:48 AM and it's customary to use the local time when talking about a battle...

If memory serves, the actual "killing blow" was from a torpedo dropped by a B5N "Kate" torp bomber.

It's true that the aircraft that destroyed the USS Arizona were Nakajima B5Ns from the Japanese carrier "Hiryu" , but they weren't armed with torpedoes but with 800kg "Type 99" armour piercing bombs which they dropped from 3,000m in a horizontal bombing run.
Also, this is not the hit which destroyed the ship, but the earlier bombing by the aircraft from the Japanese carrier "Kaga ", also carrying 800kg "Type 99" armour piercing bombs.
Also, science marches on, since it now appears the reference I used for the bomb was also wrong - the bomb I drew is in fact the 250kg Type 98 No.25 "Land Bomb" which was used in the attack, but by the planes bombing the airfields, not the ones attacking Battleship Row.
Ah well. It's official. Nothing about this drawing is remotely correct XD

Amazing attention to detail! And I like the use of bright colors instead of documentary-like dull ones, it kind of gives the impression how unexpected the attack was.

Thanks. Sadly my research was faulty on this one and the sources I had weren't the best, hence why most of what's in the picture is actually wrong, from the way the ship was facing to the actual bomb type...

This view of messages in a projectile is quite satisfactory. These writings were popularized in 1941, when Finnish Army shot the "Shots of Mainila", almost two years after USSR claimed the event to take place, which was their excuse to start the Winter War in 1939. Thus this picture is famous: [link]
This kind of events make history quite intriquing. Good work.

I know writing on projectiles is an old practice that dates as long back as the Napoleonic wars, of not earlier.

Thanks, but no, the ship was destroyed by a second bomb that hit six minutes after this one, this was simply the first one to drop on the Arizona, because I wanted the scene to look quiet and peaceful, with the ship yet undamaged and the rushing bomb as the only reminder of how it's going to turn out shortly...

Well i dont think to many people are gonna notice that thwe arizona is faceing the wrong way. And by tarps i meant the large orange covers over the top of the turret.

Actually, those weren't tarps, it was just the top of the 1,2 and 4 turrets painted red for aerial recognition.

Oh. i remember readin somewere that they had put up tarps or something similar over the turrets at the time the bomb hit.

Really? From what I know they never bothered with tarps over the turrets, because, after all, 14.5 inches of armour plate with a liberal coating of paint on top are pretty much adequate to deal with any seawater corrosion...
Now, the most likely thing is that the book you read mentioned awnings rather than tarps, which were in fact in place on the morning of December 7 on most of the Battleship row ships, as this picture clearly shows: [link] (the awnings are the white patches visible over the bow and stern)

Awnings thats the word i was looking for. Sorry for the confusion. Were im from tarps and awnings are kinda the same thing. The book in which i read that also mentioned that the tarps were a bright orange. I mistook the paint for the awnings.

Well, I always figured that tarps are draped directly over an object to protect it from the elements, while awnings are stretched on wires or posts to provide shade.
Interesting. What book was that, because I remember reading in Walter Lord's 1957 non fiction bestseller "Day of Infamy" that the awnings were white, something also discernible in the pictures (and which makes perfect sense, since you would want them to reflect as much solar radiation as possible).

We often use tarps as a cheap quick alternative to an awning, often just draping them over a quickly built wooden structure to leave us an area to enjoy outdoors and stay dry in winter. As for the book i have no idea the title. I read it so long ago. The awning thing was just one of those small tidbits of informations that seemed to stick with me.

Bah. Semantics.
Tarps, awnings - pieces of cloth hung about the place to shield the stuff below from sun and/or rain...

Yep, that is me all over.
I fuss over getting all the little details right and then manage to sneak in a huge blunder.
Case in point, I spent several hours trying to find a consensus on how the Arizona was painted on December 7 1941, only to completely forget to check which way she was facing on that fateful day...
By the way, when you say "tarps" you are referring to the canvas blast bags around the gun barrels, right?
