Description Back in my second year of the animation course, our teacher gave us small assignments once... He gave us some model sheets and storyboards and told us to draw what was happening in the storyboards but to improve on the action, poses and expressions and draw it as much on model as possible.

But instead of handing it in each week, he would check up on it each week, make suggestions and well, we weren't sure when it was to be handed in. The storyboards involved characters like Wile E. Coyote, Beetlejuice, Krusty the Clown and Pietro Maximoff AKA Quicksilver from the X-Men: Evolution show. There were three boards to reproduce for each.

Anyway, at one time, he finally told us to pick only the best of each.

This was the second and my favourite drawn Beetlejuice panel. Even if I simply loved the cartoon as a kid, I never attempted to draw him before this assignment.

Enjoy,

~Guy H.L.

Beetlejuice AKA Betelgeuse is the character from the TV show created by Tim Burton based on the movie. I do not claim to have created or designed him but I loved the show as a kid. I watched it religiously.

Great layout drawings-  This one is super well constructed and nicely acted.

One of my favorite things back in animation school was getting to draw things from my childhood, for sure, though I wasn't lucky enough to get this guy as an option haha.

Well, I showed up for the Beetlejuice, but I'm staying for everything else.  Nice work, man!

I want to be an animator too! I love how you're able to bring out beetlejuice's emotions so naturally. I'm practicing drawing, but may i ask if you have any other suggestions for a budding animator?

Thanks.

Well, advice about drawing something well... It helps to look and study what's already been done. I used to watch Beetlejuice all the time as a kid... I guess I may have absorbed a bit of the show's essence even if I hadn't ever drawn the character until the time of this past assignment... Practice is always good, of course.

As for acting in general... You have to get inside the character's head and study acting... By that, I mean, just look at movies or TV shows and pay attention to the acting. If you can pause, do it and draw the different facial expressions. Disney movies are great reference for acting in general. Just look at other people around you acting or reacting in a certain way or look at yourself in the mirror while acting and draw what you see. It's all about studying what you see and practice drawing it. They even sell books about facial expressions.

I hope this helps.

thanks a lot for the advice! I'll definitely use it, because where i'm from there's no college art programs with animation in their degree plans or anything related to it. I'm studying everything on animation, character design, and art on my own, until i can afford to go to college. So any advice or help is very much appreciated. Good luck to you too, I hope your doing well in your dreams.

Once, again, the 3-D effect is really stunning. I think it's the way you've drawn the tie... but the foreshortening on the face is also perfectly done; things recede and stick out very effectively. And all with line! I'm jealous!

Thanks, man.

I do too... It plays once a year over here on a TV station called Teletoon(The Canadian equivalent of the U.S. Cartoon Network). It plays around Halloween but I never know when and never caught it.
