It's a value layer. It helps set the tone for lighting without having to worry about the complexity of color's interaction with light. When he adds color, he'll use layers over that in certain lighting modes to be able to bring the value to color.

Thank you I love this idea/technique to work from a dark background and adding light. Usually one does the process the other way around. Me anway

How did you sharpen the edges/image at the end?? If I paint freestyle like this, the edges just tend to stay blurry unless I make a point to clean it up during the whole process.

just to tell you, i love your art, i love your style and your comics. Its inspireing me and im training to my 2D to get near to that, ofc my own style and skill, no one is really compareable to another artist, but i hope i will be able to compare my self to you once
