Description
So I had this idea for a while, of a centaur knight who is a captain of the guard from a sketch I did last December. when designing her I wanted to do a different approach to the armor of a centaur. In most renditions I saw of a centaur, usually only the human part is actually covered with armor while the lower form was usually exposed. I didn't strike me right that a centaur would only cover what is essentially half their body. So I focused of the centaur form as a whole form, rather than just man and horse connected. So anyways here's Aurelie Devoue, 17th Captain of the Guard, first knight to not be of noble blood, and first female captain in a society that would've looked down upon her role as a knight.
Aurelie is a serious and loyal soldier of her majesties order; respected and looked up to by her subordinates; But before that, she was but a small girl from a peasant family of farmers. Even at a young age she had the spirit of a knight, but she was not of noble blood, something at the time was required to be a knight of the guard, but that did not stop her from admiring the knights, especially during one time that would compel her to become a knight.
During a food delivery to the city market with her father a band of thieves held them up and threatened her father for money. Even though Aurelie was only 10 at the time, she tried to defend her father with a shovel, but was shoved aside as they closed in. But that's when the city's guard, led by the captain of the guard himself arrived and stopped the thieves before they could harm Aurelie and her father. It was that moment that Aurelie developed a true reverence to the guard and wanted to become a knight.
It was when she was 15 that she joined the Citizen Defense Reserve where she would show merit and determination. It was when she was 18 years old that she eventually managed to get enrolled to study as a soldier of her country's royal army, but being a woman she faced derogatory remarks from male recruits and officers and was often looked down upon. She never gave up however and pressed on until her chance at the trial of knights came.
The Trial of Knights was an initiation test where the captain of the guard would select participants of the trial they deemed worthy and induct them into the ranks of the Knights, and it just so happens that the Captain was the one who saved her life years ago. It was at this trial where Aurelie would prove her worth.
Although initially not allowed due to being from a peasant family and with no noble blood, Aurelie managed to convince the manager of the trials to let her in, but she was being set up as Aurelie was faced against nearly a dozen armed opponents much more than what was standard, including the fact that most of them were jealous colleagues and were told by officers to inflict as much pain and humiliation on her as possible to make her lose. Despite armed only with a training sword and shield, she managed to defeat her opponents, although heavily bruised and battered with her sword and shield broken. This impressed the Captain so much that he took her as his protege, despite the noble blood requirement.
After several years, Aurelie, while incredibly skilled beforehand, became stronger and better under the old captain, and by the time she was mid 20, she was appointed the title of Captain of the Guard by her retiring old mentor. Although met with skepticism, the young woman, having felt the experience of being looked down upon, had enough of the bias and took her role by the reins. She worked extremely hard at reforming the guards, introducing many new innovative tactics and policies that crafted an efficient and respected Guard of her country and royal family. From her trials she became serious and a bit stoic, often having a no-nonsense approach when it came to guard duties, but below the hard exterior she's actually quite friendly once you've earned her trust and respect, which is no small feat due to her having to work twice as hard earning that respect when joining the guard. Because of this she has a strong moral base and can effectively hand out justice with her sharp mind and her two swords "Artacios" and "Diramh".
Well that's about it, hope you like her!

I honestly love the design but I have just one little nitpick...the choice of weapon.
Centauri, due to their bodies would be more inclined to use various types of Polearms (Pikes, Lances, Spears, Warhammers [historical kind not fantasy kind], Halberds, Bills, Guisarme, Glaives, Partisan, Poleaxes, Naginata, War Scythes, Swordstaves, Morningstars [they made polearm mounted versions of this in addition to one-handed versions] etc.), Specialized Bows and Arrows, or long blunt force weapons like the Japanese Kanabō, Shillelagh, Long-Handled Maces, Totokia (Fiji Beaked Club/Hammer), the Horseman's pick, etc
A sword could be viable but it would have to be limited to certain types of swords that take advantage of the centaurs body structure and would have to be especially long to be able to reach their targets on the ground or against enemy human calvary or other centaurs. Which brings me to swords such as: Zanbatō, Zhanmadao, Nagamaki, and European Great Swords (which are approx. the same size as a person), etc.
These weapons would complement the body structure and economy of motion a Centaur could use. A regular sized sword would actually be useless to a centaur, due to having to work harder to reach their target in addition to not being able to take advantage of centaur's lower body to put more weight, momentum, and power behind the blows due to that lack of reach and just wastes the centaur's energy.
Though a regular sword could be used as a back-up weapon against another centaur at extreme close range (similar to a short sword) but if you really wanted to go with a sword I would suggest a Great Sword which could work well in the hands of a Centaur.

Hmm, allow me to raise an eyebrow at one thing here...
"faced against nearly a dozen armed opponents much more than what was standard, including the fact that most of them were jealous colleagues and were told by officers to inflict as much pain and humiliation on her as possible to make her lose. Despite armed only with a training sword and shield, she managed to defeat her opponents, although heavily bruised and battered with her sword and shield broken. "
Maybe I'm just an asshole, but that says more about the ineptitude of her oponents than the level of her skill... oh well.
I do like the armor design you've got there, even if the helmet is a bit overdone.

yeah it does look like they are quite the incompetent lot there are examples of this like the knights of the iron chain from beserk nicknamed 'sons of knights' due to there said lack of skill they got taken to the cleaners by gut's a vet mercenary from the band of the hawk single handly they only managed to beat him due to gut's injuries etc but there lack of combat etc really showed there.

Does she live in a settlement of only taurs? If not, what kind of race are the royal family? Does anyone for the most part look down at them for being half human half horse?

nice work but when lead, steel and iron come in to play not to mention the cavalery busting square formation her lot will fall with ease not to mention those who dispised her would be the first to fall to the mass volley fire and said stuff. other wise I like where this is going though she has to at some point be capable to allow riders on her back to do dragoon work etc or double up shock tactics to get the job done there is only so much a taur type can do with out a two legged person compensating.
other wise I like this and fav it.

She is truly brilliant. I enjoy her lifestory and believe you've created one of the strongest personalities I've come across in my time researching centaurs. Brilliant job.

Very cool picture. Makes a lot of sense. Love you did armor for upper and lower bodies. I hope she has help getting into that armor, looks like it might be a bit tough to do solo. Oddly enough, there's a manga titled "A Centaur's Life" they actually go around fully clothed. it's an interesting story. Lots of other mythologicals in there as well.

Very interesting. I take it that the other knights are also centaurs like her, huh? Must have been hard for her growing up as a peasant and working her way up to the knight order. That sure takes a lot of determination there. ^^

Thanks, well it's a mixed bag of different species in the knights of her home; Aurelie just happens to be a prominent one.
