That's right! Despite the horrors Boom Sonic saw the internet's not ALL bad Sonic! Via multidimensional internet toaster or otherwise!
Finally, after nine months I finally got to this! The next I'm thinking shouldn't be more than a week.
Part of the delay was the fact that I knew more challenging pages to draw were rapidly approaching, so as time permitted I was learning different things I’ll get into in relevant pages to help me pull them off better! One of those things being beginning to learn inking among other things, as I did here....though I'm still getting a feel for it and the different manga dip pen nibs like spoon, Maru soft and school etc... www.jetpens.com/blog/The-Best-…
That's part of what this art was about There is a striking difference from what it was before with just the Sakura microns and Prismacolor colored pencils before I did this inking which you can see here before I used the dip pen and the difference (Microns get clogged up with colored pencils, but metal ink pen nibs don't care!) Huh...I just realized looking at this my scanner bleaches out the gray variations a bit.
And usually after doing a page I spend time practicing human anatomy (manga-style and realistically), Sonic characters, and perspective but not this time! I want to go right into as much as I can, only drawing to warm up! So It definitely won’t be as long ‘till the next page as I have the pencil work for it already that I’d done 2 years ago to give me a mini goal to work towards, though I want to revise it a bit.
I still hope to improve enough in time before things get even harder and I have people to draw!!!
For people right now I spend time practicing anatomy manga style through books and realistically through books and Proko’s videos. Manga and realistic human anatomy overlap a lot, but there can especially differences in proportions and head lengths, the face and amount of exaggeration. But For drawing both Sonic and humans, for the same pose I thought these videos were neat especially for more dynamic poses! “Stunts From Sonic The Hedgehog In Real Life” m.youtube.com/watch?v=0AQg824M…
And my usual practice! www.deviantart.com/woforlife/a…
So… hopefully I can improve enough to do the more difficult pages!
Drawing Notes:
(Or me trying to analyze my own art in hopes to improve)
Scene Composition and Clouds
In the top panel I had to decide on clouds or not and to help me I knew the subtext of the panel or feeling of it I meant to be more on the calmer and not dramatic side. I usually go about the scene by means of intuition and what feels right to me, but also explicit knowledge of scene composition certainly helps and knowing the whys especially when more than one idea to compose the scene comes to mind. One series of books I’ve been learning from and like glancing at, but want to go through more thoroughly through, is Marcos Mateu-Mestre’s Framed Ink: Drawing and Composition for Visual Storytellers www.allbookstores.com/Framed-I…
And Framed Ink 2: Frame Format, Energy, and Composition for Visual Storytellers
www.allbookstores.com/Framed-I…
His biography states “Born in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, Marcos Mateu-Mestre is a visual concept, traditional animation layout, and graphic novel artist with 25 years of experience in feature animation. Some of his film credits include Balto, The Prince of Egypt, Asterix and the Vikings, Surf’s Up, and How to Train your Dragon 2. His work in film, primarily for DreamWorks Animation and Sony Pictures Animation, has been focused on both the design and cinematic composition, lighting, and visual continuity of many key animation sequences, experience he summed up in his international best-selling book Framed Ink: Drawing and Composition for Visual Storytellers.”
He also has great books on perspective and how to use it for storytelling, but in any case he mentions how the shot angle, lighting, visual flow and weight etc can effect the feeling of a scene. Some of those kinds of things he talks about I also saw talked about in
ModernDayJames’ video on “How to Make Your Drawings Cinematic” m.youtube.com/watch?v=GiDKYvYw…
And more specifically about the feeling of different shapes I found this interesting
Proko video
“What Your Shapes Say About Your Art” m.youtube.com/watch?v=h9qGMVRd…
It’s the kind of thing Mestre goes into in depth. Which while on the subject in the third panel where Sonic is hungry it's a shot NOT on eye level which is more calming, but A down shot which is more dynamic and not calming, and in this case it's to help create more a feeling of uneasiness thought not always.... maybe it could be a feeling of awe and/or of something above for example. An upshot on the other hand has a more triumphant feel which wouldn't fit here.
So, back to the top panel, when thinking about the eye flow and feel if say, I didn’t add clouds leaving all that negative space, there would be more visual heaviness more towards the bottom of the panel and to me had a less calm feeling than some clouds with some space for more even visual weight. Now I HAD thought of adding strato cumulous as I liked the idea that “These clouds typically indicate a change in the weather condition.” And also there was going gto be a change in that world, BUT they are also larger and darker with less space in between “Most people confuse stratocumulus clouds with cumulus clouds but they are quite different from each other. One of the most apparent differences between the two is that stratocumulus clouds are fatter and bigger in their size and shape. While the base of the clouds is flat and prominent, the upper portion of the cloud is muddled up.” nayturr.com/types-of-clouds/
Also shout out to “Mink” also here on Deviantart www.deviantart.com/mink-tdr and his “How to draw / paint CLOUDS || 15+ cloud types in various styles” m.youtube.com/watch?v=KgG89OXa… as though I work traditionally and his was digital, I still found it helpful and applicable to me, and with his help and reference photos , hopefully I did better than the clouds I did for this page last year! www.deviantart.com/woforlife/a… Another of his videos helpful for artists and anyone using hands extensively for activity was his video “Prevent Destroying your own Hands” m.youtube.com/watch?v=dyBPN29G…
Also I meant for the eyeflow to be a gradual incline from left to right from Sonic the hedgehog to Sonic the restaurant, but I think your eye goes towards the Sonic restaurant on the right first in this case honestly. I was going for a "C" shape eye flow also helped with the darker mountains to lead the eye across from one to the other focal point
Aerial Perspective:
The top panel is also in aerial perspective, and what can I say except I have no experience with this, and it filled me with me dread to do. I let what I wanted the feeling, or subtext as Mestre puts, of it to help guide me as well as reference photos and went for it. I’m also fortunate to own both Oga Kazuo’s art books, who hand draws and paints Studio Ghibli film backgrounds, to help give me some ideas as he does this perspective as well. I had wanted to do a subtle nod to the movie “Up” with it’s scene where Carl’s house is just getting up in the air and you see a countryside as it transitions into the city, as can be at the 8:25 mark of this video “Up & the Fear of Getting Older” m.youtube.com/watch?v=UkWcBkya… but it wasn’t going to exactly work like I thought visually, being too flat and sparse for what I was wanting…
Also, I didn’t put the hay bales in randomly, hale baling is done during the summer.
“The summer months are typically best for harvesting hay, as they provide dry, warm days for the task at hand, but agricultural producers may also do so into the early fall. “ blog.machinefinder.com/33920/g…
