Edit: I wasn't happy with how my scanner "washed out" the image and reuploaded a scanned image modified in Pixelmator to get it closer to what the image's original colors were. The original scan can still be found here.

After writing the script for this,I had thumbnailed the first 80 pages and went ahead and did this page to give me a mini goal to work towards, and I finally reached it!...2 years later... but as that was 2 years ago, now that I reached there I wanted to redo it and you can see the difference here.

I haven’t been able practice as much as I’d like but hopefully it’s still at least better!

Chaos Emeralds:

That bottom panel is what I used to work out my tutorial for doing a Chaos Emerald!

I knew from script, and then the thumbnails that this page was coming up and started prep over a year ago working out an orthographic plan of the chaos emerald I then redid to better use for working it out in a cube like in the tutorial.

Then came figuring out what coloring style to use which 13 attempts were made as seen here www.deviantart.com/woforlife/a… , www.deviantart.com/woforlife/a… ,
Before settling on this style more or less Chaos Emerald in Colored pencil attempts pt 3

And then from there, working out the coloring scheme for each emerald with contrasting colors referenced heavily from the Sonic Advance games' sprites,

and then using all that combined for the bottom panel!

That being said, I thing I may have messed up a bit as far as the cubes and marking the chaos emeralds, but not enough that I wanted to redo it!

Inking/Coloring etc...:

I finally decided to face my fear of the dynamic, yet more responsive G-pen nib this time for the outline. As usual, I used micron for the first outline, then prismacolor colored pencils and a tad watercolor for the chaos emeralds and then various manga dip pen nibs. And though I use reference pics for every page, especially for hands, they can help with ideas for shading too. I still get anxious about it though and have decide what to emphasize or not. One of my books on manga for example mentions how you differ from references when doing that style. The example of that being how you'd differ from strictly realistic in say back 3/4 head view. Normally and realistically, you'd see the ear and side of cheek but not the eye, but in the manga style you show it anyway. In the previous page where I used a toy to help me for the down shot I did something similar in showing the other eye even though realistically you couldn't.

"SAS" is an unofficial fan creation and Sonic and his games and characters are property of SEGA except any fan-created characters which are mine.
