Bonita Juarez, a devout Roman Catholic girl from New Mexico, happened upon a strange, glowing meteorite in the desert that, instead of just being a big hot rock, was an alien turd* that gave her super powers. Because comics. *(The comics said "alien waste product," so I assume it was poop).
She got the power to generate heat and flame and the ability to fly. Thinking these were literally gifts from God (I'm no Biblical scholar, but I don't remember any parts where God sent magic space poop to anyone), Bonita put on silly tights and called herself Firebird, intending to be a superhero. Also it turns out she is immortal and immune to radiation? Weird.
She fought the Hulk and then joined a team of super-on-the-nose Western-themed heroes called The Rangers (like, one dude could make his legs into a tornado, he put on a garish cowboy outfit and called himself Texas Twister....yikes).
Eventually she ended up on the West Coast Avengers doorstep and helped them on a bunch of missions. She wanted to join but only ever got reservist member status for some reason.
I think it was the space poop thing. People can be weird about that.
