An archaeologist, Hamilton Slade took a keen interest in his family's ghostly heritage. Particularly his ancestors Carter & Lincoln Spade, both costumed heroes in the Old West. Yee-haw!

Normal schoolteacher, Carter, was chosen by The Great Spirit to become "He Who Rides." Garbed in a, no joke, costume covered in phosphorescent meteor dust created by an Indigenous Medicine Man, he became The Ghost Rider (no relation to that flaming skull guy), he was also referred to as Night Rider or Phantom Rider. Whatever he was called, he dished out spooky western justice for a decade. Rootin' tootin'!

Eventually the hero life claimed Carter's, and his brother Lincoln took over his costumed hero duties. Lincoln, along with some other notable Western Heroes, even got dragged into multiple wacky time travel adventures involving the Avengers. Sadly, Lincoln was not exactly...sane. *sad cowboy noises*

During one time travel exploit the West Coast Avengers were briefly stuck in the Old West. Lincoln became obsessed with the Avenger, Mockingbird and kidnapped her right as the heroes were helplessly whisked away through time. He drugged & possibly sexually assaulted her, and in a confrontation later, Mockingbird allowed him to fall to his death, making the "phantom" part of his name very real.

This historical fact never made its way to Hamilton in the modern day. Which is why when he found the Phantom Rider's gear and it magically turned him into the NEW Phantom Rider by allowing Lincoln's spirit to possess him, no one batted an eye. Phantom Rider soon joined a team of Southwest heroes called The Rangers. Yikes, buckaroos!

When the Rangers met the WCA in the present, Lincoln began stalking & harassing Mockingbird, threatening to expose her "murder" of him. And it nearly worked. The news broke up Hawkeye & Mockingbird's marriage, and split the team in two. Eventually, Carter's spirit also returned and Lincoln was banished from this plane. Carter began to work with Hamilton, so the Phantom Rider wouldn't have to ride into the sunset. *pew pew six shooter noises*
