Your plush sculptures are really realistic and detailed. When did you start making them?

Would it be possible to get a commission of this exact wolf in a smaller size? It is BEAUTIFUL!!!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

WolfknightlordJ In reply to illuminatedface [2012-11-06 22:54:28 +0000 UTC]

Well, the glass eyes aren't made in sizes smaller than this one (these eyes were already way too big for realistic proportions). The details I made out of sculpty and they'd be annoying to remake in tiny size and place again.

[link]
Is more or less the same design but a smaller size, and with better portions. I always thought the ears and eyes of the snow wolf made it look like a fox or coyote.

They were both labors of love, and very detailed, so I would probably value a new commission at 300 dollars or so.

Hey quick question,

How long does it take to make one of thses large wolves?
I'm curious about them, they're adorable!!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

WolfknightlordJ In reply to IzzytheAwesome [2011-03-27 03:00:36 +0000 UTC]

Well, there's only one thus far, and it took about 2 months of fairly solid work to get done. Overall, it was a big pain XD.

I haven't had a chance to make any lately because of school though.

WoofMewMew [2011-02-24 23:21:28 +0000 UTC]

How long did this take you to make? I'm assuming you don't do commissions because all of these look to be personal works. It looks great :3

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

WolfknightlordJ In reply to WoofMewMew [2011-02-25 01:00:24 +0000 UTC]

Oh...god.. I guess I was planning for a few months, and then I actually worked on it fairly straight for about 2 months. This one is quite big though (14 inches tall at the shoulder, I think? and 23 inches long not including the tail.) and I sew by hand.

I normally do do commissions, but I am not accepting any right now because I have a customer who has been waiting for a REALLY long time, and I work on them so slowly because of vet school. I feel a lot of pressure to use my free time to try to finish commissions when I really need that time for myself. I will reopen for a few during the summer I think.

If you are interested in realistic wild animal plushes for a comparable price, I would look at Kosen's toys, which are of exceptional quality though in the 80-200 USD price range.

He's beautiful, I'm surprised that you want to alter him. He looks gorgeous as he is. You make it sound like it's a small job to 'fix' him but I know that it's not, not by a long stretch.
I think you did a great job (and I'm loving the eyes).

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

WolfknightlordJ In reply to LisaAP [2011-01-31 22:52:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much, I am so honored you favorited him! I love the eyes too, I just need to figure out how to move them back a bit.

It's not that I think he looks terrible...I just know I can do better, and I want to try some new techniques to see if they improve the design for the second one I want to make (Codename version 2. XD) I have a really strong (8 gage) wire in one of my smaller guys, and I think it makes words of difference on how well they balance and how flexible. I can just see...he's slightly off from my photographs, but most parts look right, it will just take some tweaks.

He balances very well, but I would like to make him so that he can lay down, pose his feet, turn his head and doesn't need so much leg-stuffing, and to make the claws more even, and the paw-pads visible (They ended up covered in fuzz XD.)

I made actual claw replicas with the bony end portion, but I ended up only needing the front part of the claw. I've also taken nose anatomy at this point, so I can work on better nostrils and I realize that short-furred black fabric between the two white fuzzy portions will give the ear more depth and maybe use a weak wire to rig it for flexibility...

LisaAP In reply to WolfknightlordJ [2011-02-01 11:37:57 +0000 UTC]

I hear you. I always see things that I want to change in my creations too. I don't think I've made a single animal that I'm 100% happy with, I always see room for improvement. I admire your willingness to go back and work on something once it's 'complete', Once I've passed the stuffing and sewing up phase I don't go back. I've remade ears etc and even a head once but that's always been before attachment. Mind you if I really hated the finished animal I guess I'd just have to start over, I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't.
Keep up the fantastic work, I'll be watching and admiring.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

WolfknightlordJ In reply to LisaAP [2011-02-01 16:46:06 +0000 UTC]

I don't generally remake the ones I have plans on selling, or commissions past the attachment point, but in this case, it's more like putting a patch on something I'm keeping for a while since I don't have the time to commit to an entirely new project until summer.

Though I am curious about trying a "Kosen" style wolf head on him to see if it improves it and makes the eyes more forward...

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

LisaAP In reply to WolfknightlordJ [2011-02-02 15:40:54 +0000 UTC]

I'm not familiar with a 'Kosen' style wolf head. I must go check that out now, I assume that you are referring to the manufacturer of plushies?
Working with taxidermy eyes brings out a whole extra set of problems doesn't it! Fitting black eyes with a wire loop is a doddle in comparison. The setting of them is vital to the overall look of the face. If one isn't positioned exactly the same as the other the animal can end up looking slightly cross-eyed.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

WolfknightlordJ In reply to LisaAP [2011-02-02 17:18:37 +0000 UTC]

They are the german plush company. I've noticed, after buying one of their wolves, they make the heads much differently than I do. The muzzle is a separate piece, but only made of three parts, rather than four, the area with the eyes is "goggle style" and then the cheeks are another separate piece.

The taxidermy eyes were so difficult to work with, because even if I positioned the actual eyes entirely straight, if I didn't set the eyelids perfectly, or made them too tight there was obvious unevenness. It was made more difficult because I decided to use an eye with "whites" around it which made settling more difficult. I also realized that the smallest eyes I could find are too big! I would need to order custom eyes to have it to the right scale to go with the head.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

LisaAP In reply to WolfknightlordJ [2011-02-05 18:19:40 +0000 UTC]

The eyes don't look over large to me, in fact I'd say that they were a good choice for an animal of that size, but then I haven't studied the real thing exhaustively like I'm sure you have. One of the the drawback's with working taxidermy eyes is that they are mainly designed for lifesized animals and the cost of making a life-sized version ooh, just makes me shudder.
I have just started creating another tarsier for a customer and am dreading working on a face that is pretty much ALL eyes, lol!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

WolfknightlordJ In reply to LisaAP [2011-02-05 18:31:27 +0000 UTC]

lol. Your other one looked perfect, honestly, though I'm sure it's difficult to position them. I had to stuff the compartment I made behind the eyes to make them at the same depth.

I don't ever plan to make a life-sized version of large animals, so it's fortunate that most of your commissions have been smaller. XD.

Starcanis [2011-01-26 14:15:12 +0000 UTC]

I just love this! My favorite part is the beautiful shape of the head, and his mouth. Was it drawn on, or sewn? Wonderful job; it must have taken forever to sew all the different colors together.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

WolfknightlordJ In reply to Starcanis [2011-01-26 15:05:02 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. His mouth was all three XD. It was a seperate piece that was made with black thread, and then painted.

I plan to fix him up over the next few weeks, I already made him longer legs, and I'm going to make him a new, longer neck, replace his frame with a stronger one, smaller eyes, and fix his ears to not be quite so big.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Starcanis In reply to WolfknightlordJ [2011-01-31 17:12:53 +0000 UTC]

Fancy! XD I would think that fixing him would be a pain after he was all done, especially with using more of that great fur. I think his legs look fine, but I can't wait to see what he looks like remodeled.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

WolfknightlordJ In reply to Starcanis [2011-01-31 17:25:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's a pain, but I don't have time to make a second big wolf right now, so I'll just make the replacement parts ahead of time, and then do a quick switch when I change his wiring, since I have to unstuff him for that.

It gives me time to experiment with different toes, and a different head style too.
