Aw, a howling woofer. Looking at this pic just makes me want to hop outside and howl my little heart out. Simply gorgeous work here. The colored pencils you used did a great job. The colors blend flawlessly and the transition from grey, white, and black is so smooth. Lovely pose. The only thing that's missing is a bright moon and a dark forest. Very nice work!

gonna break the news to ya, i don't use colored pencils for grey scale... i rely on my trusty 0.5 mechanical pencil. a lot of people have thought it was colored pencil, so you're not alone. not to toot my own horn or nuthin', but i'm pretty good at making my mech pencil do as i say. tortillian helps a lot too, blends the lead really well. and only a dollar something for 3 from michaels!

The shading here is beautiful!

yeah, a lot of people seem to really like the shading on this one. but i've found i can do the exact same shading but without the black outline and it won't be as popular. something about that black line really brings out the shading.

that's beautiful shading you have there, very beautiful indeed I can't get dark tones to work very well sometimes when it comes to shading. I end up making it too light but sometimes it just doesn't look dark anyway and then my teacher gets mad *end of rant* lol

awww, well, i've always impressed people (and art teachers) with my control of a mech pencil to do shading like that... maybe you need a darker lead? like 2B or something.

nuh nuh, I have the equipment (I have pencils 4H to 8B) but I just look at photos and don't see as many dark tones as other people. Maybe my vision is screwed

oh, hm... maybe just do a whole page of gradient from black to as light as you can make it. i did that in art class a long time ago and it helped. i doubt it's your vision... -mulls this over-

I've noticed improvement too! I love the shading. I'm trying to figure out how to do that w/o smuding up the picture.

wolfsilvermoon In reply to Wolfyu [2004-01-20 15:00:01 +0000 UTC]

well, i just do the basic darker colors (black and darker grays) then use a tortillian (little rolled up piece of paper you can buy at michael's, about 3 for a dollar) to smooth it out. and for some reason, adding black pen around the edges makes it look really cool.

thanks, i've been practicing really hard and the improval is starting to show to me too. been able to just sketch out the general pose from a reference (you know, little bubbly things) then finish it out by myself without looking at the picture again. making me happy. glad you noticed!
