This is for *MoonsongWolf 's Vesper Facility Character Design Contest .

Méabh (pronounced MAYV) is from the Gaelic Medb meaning "intoxicating"; it is also my ham-handed oblique reference to Shakespeare's Queen Mab who compels sleepers to dream ... through intoxication in this case .

She is a bald uakari, one of the rare "Mystery Men" of Vesper. She lives and works at the edge of a large, multi-species hub, and is not the only uakari in residence there, but is certainly the most high profile. Those with whom she is not familiar often refer to her solely as "The Winemaker". "The Dreamgiver" is a derisive nickname used by her detractors in reference to those who overindulge and become dependent on the state of unreality her wines bring, a name which she often uses gently in self-mockery.

She is an old female who has been in the business of wine-making for a long time, and has been sharpening her business acumen for even longer. She commands a strange combination of respect and disdain from the animals of the Facility, due to mixed opinions about both alcohol and her business practices.

Her business is large and infamous, and thus has no need for a name, and consists mostly of brewing algae wine. However, she is one of the few who have figured out how to grow grapes, and how to make grape wine, and she hoards this knowledge jealously. She makes the ceremonial wines for the local religious institutions, fancy wines for those with wealth and political clout, but also not-so subtly taps the black market and sells to Rogues and other animals who live in the underbelly of the system. As she is now older and runs a larger business, she has a number of mostly younger Barbarians (macaques) and a few rats in her dedicated employ.

She found the broken, three-legged Seeker Golem when she was young and fearless and exploratory and fixed it to the best of her limited technical capabilities. She has named it Grind, and it accompanies her when she ventures about, for safety and intimidation purposes. It never speaks, and has never shown any signs of aggression, and some think it might have been rendered permanently docile, but most think it unwise to test its boundaries. Its presence, some say, has been a key component of her success, keeping her competitors and those who would reign in her business at bay.

Actual Artist's Comments: I recently managed a brief trip to California, and I was inspired by our long drive through the California wine country. Also, uakaris are really, really weird looking and we totally need more of them around. Seriously, they creeped me out at first, but as I kept looking, they got cuter. Come on guys, bright red skull-headed creepy-cute monkeys... how awesome is that!?
