One thing I don't get is why it's a Master System over in the UK, but Sega Genesis in North America... I didn't think that our cultures would be so different as to need different names for a Japanese console. =/

No. Mega Drive is the Genesis (US had some legal wotnot so they got the crappy name).
Simply put, Master System + NES = 8-bit, Mega Drive/Genesis + SNES = 16-bit.
I should've really taken into account how obscure Sega stuff that isn't Sonic or Dreamcast is to Americans...
