Description Continuing with the Ninja Turtles redesign series with Splinter (counting down to the Turtles themselves).

I was thinking of Splinter being more of a Morihei Ueshiba figure. He seemed more like he would use an Aikido style martial arts to me, redirecting a villain's attack back at them. Anyway, this is my version of Splinter as an old wisened sensei figure.

Thanks very much! I'm glad you like it.

You should definitely give yours a scan. It's a bit difficult to see the details.

Thanks! Yeah, it was actually based off of the guy that make up Aikido, the martial art. It seemed quite appropriate.

DUDE! This is great! I love your designs AND the fact that you reference Aikido. I've practiced Aikido for 6 years and I love seeing when other people use its ideas in art.

Thanks!

My dad actually studied Aikido for a number of years, so I picked some of the stuff up as a kid. Of course at the time I was more into the kind of martial arts that involved breaking things.

Yeah, not a whole lot of that in aikido.

Well keep up the great work, your stuff looks amazing!

Your intense understanding of shapes triumphs once again, the robe (and especially the old-man knuckles) really help this piece shine along with the rest of your work. The beard is a nice touch, too. Master Splinter has never looked this good. This almost, almost rivals the success you had with April. Hamato Yoshi himself would be envious of your own brand of mastery.

WonderDookie In reply to KrimeFyta [2010-03-28 04:52:14 +0000 UTC]

Well thank you much man. And I meant to say, before I accidentally hit the send button, that I figure he knows a variety of martial arts that he taught to the turtles, but he prefers to use Aikido himself. To be honest, my knowledge of martial arts is pretty limited. Just what I've seen in Jackie Chan movies.

KrimeFyta In reply to KrimeFyta [2010-03-26 00:11:52 +0000 UTC]

Forgive my insolent emptiness, but isn't Aikido used primarily by samurai? I think that the philosophy matches Splinter's "bloodshed-as-a-last-resort" personality, though to produce the Ninja Turtles, wouldn't he have to be adept in the shadowy ways of Ninjutsu? Perhaps you meant to imply that Splinter's teacher, the noble Hamato Yoshi, invented an emergent (perhaps "bastardized") style of Ninpo that embraces the noble ideas of Bushido and the peaceful philosophies of Aikido with the sheer determination and cold effectiveness of Ninpō? If this is true, then your understanding of the Turtles is far greater than my own.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WonderDookie In reply to KrimeFyta [2010-03-28 04:50:01 +0000 UTC]

haha. I'm not sure who used Aikido primarily. My dad used to study it when I was a kid, so that's how I know about it, and I always thought the originator guy sounded pretty cool (and I was a kid so I always compared him a bit to Splinter).
