Description
Watching the history channel the other day and found out that Canada was in ww2 and fought side by side with the American's, now this is fact I never heard in history class , which in itself tells the quality of a south Texas education. So I thought "hey why not do a Canadian captain America, set in ww2"
So my first take on him was simple and really LAME, red and white with a maple leaf just like every other Canadian superhero you might find in a Google or da search, so I did some research, and let me tell you I was off, real off.
So let me set the scene.
The Second World War began in 1939, when Adolph Hitler and the German Army invaded Poland. Great Britain and France declared war, and on September 9th, 1939, Canada, supporting Great Britain, became the first North American nation to declare war on Germany.
Throughout late 1939 and early 1940, the Allied and Axis powers were at a stalemate. That changed when Germany invaded France, over-running their defenses and pushing the British off the European continent in the Dunkirk evacuation.
With the Russians and United States still neutral, the British Empire was all that stood between Germany and domination of the world. So with weight of the free world on his shoulders Commando Courage led the fight to push back the Nazi threat.
Canada played a large role in the Second World War and on eight major campaigns and battles Canadians participated in. Thanks to in part by Commando Courage and his Courage Crusaders.
Wanted to give him as accurate as weapons as the Canadian soldiers had so he's sporting the mark III combat helmet also known as the 'turtle'
SMLE N4 Mark 1 rifle with bayonet on one shoulder
A shovel carried blade up on the other shoulder
And a Thompson SMG M1928A1 at his side, a gun that was widely utilized in the European theater by the US, British and Canadian Commando units.
And cuz every patriot hero needs one a shield based of his country's flag. Now like most I thought the Canadian flag was red and white with a maple leaf, well turns out that's only the current flag, Canada has had all sorts of flags. the one I used was the one that they used from (1921-1957)which is called the "Red ensign" (and if any one says "may there's a lot more detail in the coat-of-arms than you put it" I swear I'll ninja kick 'em in the head) that thing is jammed pack with detail and every other version of a Canadian take on a ww2 hero has him running around in red and white with a maple leaf shield, which was not even the flag until 1965 .
(Don't believe me go check)
The Canadian Red Ensign had been unofficially used since the 1890s, it was the official flag for use on Canadian merchant ships. On land, however, the official national flag was the Union Flag. Despite its unofficial status, the Red Ensign was widely used on land as well. In 1924, the Red Ensign was approved for use on Canadian government buildings outside Canada, and from 1945 for those inside Canada as well. The Red Ensign served until 1965 when it was replaced by today's Maple Leaf Flag.
Here Canada, I give you a ww2 hero that was in the fight BEFORE Kirby's Captain America.
And I bet on V - E Day both he and cap shared a glass of milk and toasted to freedom
