Description
Update 1.1: So I added another service. Using MaxMind free database on my hosting this time. Works fine for my home IP but I would like some more input from you guys on how good MaxMind is in comparison with HostIP.-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well as I started running a blog I want to run some experiments and make some tools. Goelocation was a tempering thing to play with and now I need it for something so here is a quick experiment.
For services and image used check About section (my code, Nasa image, hostip.info service/data).
In info section you will be able to see information about you
When it loads it will show you on the map
Information is not very precise (for me mistake is something like 10-15Km but on world scale it is not that bad).
Update:
Made a little "fix". Now it detects if coordinate is not available and shows text instead of pointing you to the ocean below Africa lol
Update 2
Well refixed it again lol... Should not show circle when position is not known.
In other news I may be figured how to use google geo ip without JS on DA sooo you will see Google powered version soon. Stay tuned
Update 3
Little explanation of how that was made:

Well it is based on public IP->location database. If you come here trough some proxy so that I do not see your actual IP or if your IP is not in that database or its location if not well known for some reason this thing will not work. Actually it makes mistakes all the time, just most of the time they are relatively small. Like 20 miles radius from your actual place. But if by "server you bounce from" you means that you are here trough some proxy, then yes, it will show your proxy location.

Hehe Well its not very precise
Checks some public info about where IP was registered so it can be way off.

HostIP didn't like me, though MaxMind improved it's estimate, now it's 150 miles away

I guess it showed your location more or less correctly. Well internet is like a mail. You do know addresses at at least. Though they can be spooked if needed as with mail too. There are a lot spookier things out there

Have you tried MaxMind? So far MaxMind found some coordinate for everyone, not precise but. Probably you did not read comment and checked only HostIP service. And there are two here.

Yeah I checked today how it behaves when IP is not in database. I guess it indeed does not show a coordinate. Though you are first person I hear from so far with such problem. IPs I tested were from ranges that can't have a location. As far as I heard database I sue currently has something like 79% of IP mapped more or less meaning that you are in that 20% part.
BTW google latitude detects you?

yeah it's kinda strange i think it's because my isp, i checked today in my house and it find me xD where it didn't find me was at my girlfriend house, dunno if it's the modem config, or something...
and yes google latitude says where i am

wonderwhy-ER In reply to rudybb [2010-05-04 21:32:02 +0000 UTC]
Well that means that data set just lacks info on your IP. If latitude finds it and this does not.
