If you want a couple pics that show Slash's face, get the July '04 issue of Guitar One magazine, wherein he's interviewed. You all know he's in a new band, Velvet Revolver, right?

Yeah, just saw the video for Slither...and like I told Rockett-Queen, take away the dancing girls and the up close and personal shots of half naked Scott, and it's pretty good visually...the song wasn't too bad either...
Guitar One Magazine..Hmm...usually I buy Doll magazines, the staff of Barnes and Noble are going to raise eyebrows when I get that one...

I haven't seen the vid yet, but if there's dancing girls (very rock and roll), it should be good! I'm looking forward to hearing their disc. I would have been a huge GNR fan if it weren't for egotistical, screechy Axl, and this new band is by all accounts sort of like GNR (it includes their bassist and drummer) but with a good singer
As for the magazine purchase, we'll make a leather-wearing headbanger out of you yet

You know, I'm kind of glad I discovered (er, was introduced to) GNR after they broke up, becuase Axl's ego/complaining/idiocy would have really put me off..However, I don't think those aspects of his personality comes through in his singing at all (thank god.) As for his voice...well, that's a matter of taste
Yes, Scott's voice is nice..mild (well, after Axl) and I think they will do great (I hope so anyway) I wanted to listen to the other song clips on their site (as well a re-watch the video (I want gold pants now)) but the comp in my room won't cooperate..I think I need to download RealOne Player or something > .<
Do they allow electric fiddles in Rock and Roll?

Axl was a horror during the band's heyday (still is, apparently), and back then GNR were probably the biggest band in the world, so you just couldn't escape the guy. As for the screechiness of his voice, check out some live recordings/video footage--not flattering at all. Nails on a chalkboard would be a soothing lullaby by comparison. Fortunately, the studio recordings fare a bit better in that regard.
As for the electric fiddle, if Dave Matthews' band has used one, why not? And if Jethro Tull had a flautist, anything is possible

Yeah, I have heard live recordings etc...like I said...matter of taste, kind of like Rod Stewart, you like him or you don't.
Hmmm.. My cousin had one Dave M. Band CD and it didn't do anything for me..maybe I'll give it another try if they have electric fiddle...

Well, Stewart can hold a tune, whatever one thinks of his musical leanings There were times when Axl's voice would crack so badly that one couldn't always say the same of him. It got really ragged toward the end of the band. Too bad he didn't take better care of his voice because on the studio albums, it was pretty good for that style of music. (If you dig Axl, check out the similar but imo superior Tom Keifer of Cinderella--another 80's band you might dig, with a vibe somewhat similar to GNR.)
I don't know if Matthews still has the fiddler (I don't have any of his albums), but I remember when his band first hit the scene in the mid 90's they did, so it's probably best to check those albums first. Btw, Kansas has a violinist/fiddler, too [link]

I listened to some clips of Cinderella..good stuff..Mr Keifer does have a similer vocal style, but in all the songs I listened to (8 all together, from two different albums) it sounded the same (but still good) and kind of in the same octave range.. Studio Axl (which is mostly what I listen to anyhow) could do all kinds of amazing things with that voice of his...
I do like Cinderella, and I'll think about getting something...
Oohhh...and I'll look into Kansas as well..One of the reasons I like Wolfstone...they're rock, but they have a soft Celtic side (with amazing fiddle) as well... [link]
I'm Praying that link works...

SixStringer In reply to WoolSocks [2004-05-18 11:37:52 +0000 UTC]
Link works--thanks! I'm not familiar with them. You know, you may already by familiar with Kansas and not know it: "Dust in the Wind", "Carry on Wayward Son", and a few others are staples of classic rock radio. I suppose if you're into fiddle, country and bluegrass would make more sense, but all kinds of instruments show up in rock from time to time, despite its guitar-centrism.
Cinderella were one of the better hair metal bands and rather like GNR in that they tended more towards a bluesy, Stones-influenced style instead of the more pop orientation of bands like Poison.
