Description

E.v.e. continued her patrol beat, with Dreadknox flying off to do some early morning fishing, and Speedifst, Fuzzrir, and Zombie joining her in the place of Clueless and Jack O Lantern. As they sidled into the patrol route, Speedifist remarked, "I heard about the Boneknapper attack earlier... in other news, Clueless is still tied up at the restroom." E.v.e. shook her head and kept walking. The fog was now rolling over the camp, though mercifully, it was thinning out in the early morning sunlight. The patrol party soon came within sight of a massive abandoned factory sitting along the shoreline of an artificial lake. E.v.e. shuddered when she saw it- she had almost drowned in that artificial lake a few weeks earlier. The foreboding appearance of the abandoned factory did not help the creepy atmosphere. Speedifist coughed uneasily, and stopped to survey the exterior of the factory. Fuzzrir nervously pawed at the ground. Zombie stopped to sniff at an interesting leaf, and accidentally blew it away with a single blast of hot air from her nose. Another wave of fog began to roll off the surface of the artificial lake, mingling with the fog that was already rolling over the camp. Uneasy, the patrol resumed walking towards the massive factory.

They barely took two steps inside the factory door when they realized that they weren't alone. Shadowy figures perched on the derelict machinery and scuttled around the piping high above their heads. A few shadows hovered in mid air, watching the intruders as they picked their way through broken parts and run down assembly lines. Keeping his eyes on one particularly aggressive looking dragon, Speedifist asked, "What is this place? Why are there so many machines here? What did it do?" E.v.e. glanced more closely at the machinery, replying, "It's a run down factory... I think they mass produced cybernetics here."At that moment, Fuzzrir accidentally stepped on a particularly noisy piece of broken equipment on the floor, and all hell broke loose.

A flock of Skrillknappers dove from the machinery and began dive bombing the patrol, causing them to break into a run. E.v.e., Speedifist, Fuzzrir, and Zombie ran through, jumped over, and dodged around broken machines as fast as they could. The Skrillknappers began to pursue them, some directly chasing them on foot, others circling overhead on the wing. A few particularly aggressive individuals got too close for comfort, and Sppedifist strung and fired his crossbow in record time. E.v.e. blindly fired her plasma cannon at the pursuing Skrillknappers, trying her hardest to focus on dodging the machines. Remembering a similar chase involving Wall.e, E.v.e. began knocking down obstacles and pinballing fallen parts at the Skrillknappers. A series of outraged roars and flapping wings told E.v.e. and Speedifist that their efforts were working for now. Zombie and Fuzzrir briefly ran ahead of their trainers, and then suddenly skidded to a stop, squawking in alarm. E.v.e. and Speedifist skidded to a halt as well. Multiple Skrillknappers had landed directly in front of them. E.v.e. and Speedifist turned around and watched in horror as more Skrillknappers landed behind them. Still more circled overhead. They were trapped. One of the Skrillknappers charged at them, and Fuzzrir, panicked, fired a shot. The ice blast exploded against the Skrillknappers throat, prematurely discharging its lightning blast. The Skrillknapper roared, enraged, and its companions attempted to get in on the action. Speedfist loosed more crossbow bolts at the Skrillknappers, slowing down two of them. E.v.e. tripped up three more by hitting them with a barrage of blasts from her plasma cannon. Fuzzrir sprayed a continuous blast of ice at the floor, rapidly freezing a layer of black ice onto it, and causing the Skrillknappers behind them to slip and fall into an angry heap. Zombie stood straight up, spread her wings, and cut loose a thunderous roar, scaring off the rest of the Skrillknappers. She then snatched a bone off a nearby conveyor belt, and dropped it into her saddlebag. This action angered the Skrillknappers into coming back for another attack, and the party resumed running through the desolate factory.

The cacophonous sound of Skrillknappers ramming at full speed into the double doors and the surrounding wall and collapsing was heard by half of the shantytown shortly thereafter. Catching their breath against the wall, E.v.e. and Speedifist exchanged frightened and confused glances. Something was definitely not right with how the Skrillknapper flock was behaving. When she could speak, E.v.e. gasped, "First the bone shower, then the Titanwing Boneknapper, and now this! What the fuck is going on?!?" Speedifist doubled over into a coughing fit, and then stood back up and wheezed, "... You tell me." Zombie poked at her saddlebag with her nose horn, and then poked E.v.e. with it. Perplexed, E.v.e. reached into the saddlebag in question and pulled out the bone. She turned it over in her hands and stared at it. It was a hatchling sized cervical vertebra, presumably from a Screaming Death. E.v.e. showed the bone to Speedifist, who asked, "Could that bone have something to do with it?"
