Description
I effectively fleshed out Wall.es and E.v.e.s romance by taking inspiration from How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World if you hadn't already guessed. This particular scene was inspired by the scene/track "As Long As He's Safe", which is towards the end of the movie. This particular scene struck me as a particularly powerful and well written scene... for a bad movie. I felt that this scene still fell kind of flat, because it was ultimately used for cheap drama... and one single dragon choosing wrong in a trolley problem and needing his rider to come after him and save his butt just to get knocked out by a poorly written villain, only to leave anyway? That's a pretty weak reason for all of the dragons to leave, let alone for the separation to be permanent.
Aside from the soundtrack, the main thing that I tried to capture was the general cinematography of the scene, with some changes. As for improvements/Alternate Universe based changes... the reason for this scene happening in the AU is a bit stronger if still not the strongest. In 2105, Buy N Large and its consumers have essentially polluted the planet a bit too much... and caused climate change which they think is irreversible. Due to some shady policies, secret black market and gray market politicking, and general mismanagement, instead of building robots to deal with the mess Buy N Large and its cohorts Vishkar Incorporated and Volskaya Industries kidnap synths by the millions, and turn them all into cyborgs with robot like programming (or possibly mind control.) In the process, couples such as Emily and Lena Oxton are ripped apart, and turned into different models of cyborg. In this case, Lena gets turned into an "Extraterrestrial vegetation Evaluator" or E.v.e. probe, and Emily gets turned into a "Waste Allocation Load Lifter: Earth Class" or Wall.e drone. Hence, them having to say goodbye.
I also sort of combined Toothless'es and Hiccup's roles in the original scene, and then turned it into an in universe memory to make it slightly more poignant. Wall.e getting knocked out of the sky is similar to Toothless, but remaining conscious the whole time is from Hiccup. I also used this scene for some foreshadowing to strengthen it a little more. In particular, the last kiss shared between the two of them foreshadows the cyborgs particular type of kiss being able to affect each others hardware and programming... as well as acting as an in universe explanation for Wall.es personality. I also minimized the dialogue within that scene, as it just felt better to have it occur mostly non-verbally, fitting the "Mime and Music" style of storytelling the original film (Wall.e, not the Hidden World) utilized during its first act. I also brought this memory up in Chapter 8 because E.v.e.'s character needed some fleshing out to explain why she acts so aggressive to Wall.e early on- she's feeling the pain of having lost Wall.e and she doesn't want to risk opening herself up to Wall.e and then losing her again.
