Description The shuttle detached from the expedition's base ship with a jolt. Strapped in tightly, the scientists were apprehensive. Reentry was the choke point of every mission: anything that could go wrong with this venture was likely to happen in the next ten minutes.
The target planet loomed before them, mottled in blues, reds, oranges, and whites. It was beautiful, but unforgiving. If anything went wrong now, nature would not hesitate to destroy the tiny craft and its fragile occupants.
The pilots fired the main engine, leaving on the burn just long enough to get the shuttle deep into Freyr's gravity well. They started to accelerate. Every gut in the room dropped as they entered free fall. The craft shuddered as it plummeted through the thermosphere, beginning to glow with friction.
This was the moment of truth for the voyagers. Do... or die...

Part of a series of fanart/practice paintings dealing with Freyr , which is the project of Will Grike, aka AstroEvo .
Next up in the series is Landing on Freyr (out soon!).

Don't worry, guys! Traditional drawings will return soon too!

Shuttle referenced from this photo of an X-38 "ISS lifeboat" emergency reentry vehicle .
