Description This is a map I've drawn to test a tutorial from the Cartography Guild by Tear. As it's just a test there isnt much detail on it.

Ramah introduced me to the tutorial. You can find a similar map he has done here [link]

Total time is about 7h

Visit The World Building School here [link]

P.S If you would like to use this map for your own world Building purposes, please feel free. Though do let me know/post a link as I'd love to see what you do with it.

Do you have a link to the actual tutorial?

Never mind. I actually just did a DA search for it and found the link, but for some reason the page wouldn't load. Anyway, sorry for the lazy question and good job on that map. It has a kind of elegance to it that I don't always see in Scifi maps

Hey ParadiseKiss,

Thank's for your comment. I'm using CS5, though a lot of the techniques will work in any CS (as far as I'm aware) It has been along time since I used anything less than CS4 so I forget what features Adobe has added when.

My next plan, when I have a bit of spare time, is to try and steamline the process to improve development speed and also improve the quality. I'm not happy with some of the colouring.

How are you btw? Working on any interesting projects at the moment?

ParadiseKissTango In reply to WorldBuilding [2011-06-03 19:26:08 +0000 UTC]

No problem, it's a great map. I've also checked out your world building school and the article on the approach to world building is incredibly helpful.

Good luck with streamlining your process, although in terms of quality, this map is definitely high quality ^^. I have Photoshop Elements 5, which I've figured out doesn't have the a lot of features that I need after looking up many cartography tutorials. What do you plan to change with the coloring, btw?

Right now, my mapmaking has kind of slowed to a halt, so I've been working on custom character sheets, and d&d tiles.

Thanks! I'm glad you found The World Building School useful. Sometimes I do wonder if it's helpful or not, so it's nice to hear feedback

Yea I think you might struggle with Photoshop Elements, but it would be cool to see what you can come up with. Maybe you could figure out a cool map style that would work well in Photoshop Elements.

My map making is slow as well as I don't have Photoshop at home so I only get about an hour after work to do any digital work. As for the colouring I'm not too sure. I'd like the mountains to pop out a little more and the tree's to look more tree like.

WorldBuilding In reply to BlackTowerOfTime [2011-04-15 14:00:42 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I'm happy with how it came out on the whole but there are things that can be improved. The geography isn't realistic for one. I'm having a play around with it as we speak

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Wyvern-1 In reply to WorldBuilding [2011-04-18 03:33:03 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't know about that. What exactly is "realistic" in terms of constructing a fictional map?

Heh...in short, don't kid yourself. The geography may be very alien and unusual, but that doesn't necessarily make it unrealistic.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WorldBuilding In reply to Wyvern-1 [2011-04-18 08:34:01 +0000 UTC]

Well what I mean by "realistic" is I didn't put in the tectonic plates, prevaling winds or temperate bands. Therefore I can't be certain that each climate is correct. E.g. the way the mountains formed or the fact I have quite a bit of grassland checkered with desert.

When developing a full world map I'd put all these things in. Granted it is possible to form reasons why the climates are as they are, but I like to geek out over getting them "correct" lol.

Thanks for your comment btw
