Description African painted dog (or African wild dog, Lycaon pictus, pes hyenový), ZOO Dvůr Králové nad Labem, Czech republic.

Few months ago, a kid fell into the enclosure of African wild dogs in some foreign ZOO - of course the predators ripped the kid apart. I would say something about the parents and their behavior, but I do not want to be sued

INFO ABOUT THE ANIMAL:

Name: African wild dog (Lycaon pictus)
Location: spots in Eastern and South Africa
Biotop: savanna
Size: 1.1 m long + 40 cm tail weight: up to 35 Kg
Diet: boars, antelopes, zebras, wildebeast, prey even bigger than the dog.
Conservation status: Endangered
Interesting facts: African wild dogs are very social animals, they live in pack with 6-80 members and usually only dominant pair breeds | African wild dogs are one of the most successful predators of the world, they usually manage to catch the prey in 80 % of the cases (for example only every 10th attack of the tiger is successful). African wild dogs do not have a good reputation, because they tend to rip the prey, eating it while it is still alive... | The population of African wild dogs is threatened because of feral domestic dogs which carry illnesses mortal to African wild dogs | Painted dogs are very fast runners.

The Parents are the ones to have killed their kid by letting and taking their kid to a zoo in the first place!!

I would say it was an accident
you can not blame the dog, but at the same time, parent definitely did not want to kill their baby. They were supposed to be more careful of course! But the punishment is too cruel

well, at least the dogs weren't euthanized as in most cases (except for one)

Já jsem se musel tak smát, že jsem psal čistě foneticky, takže teď se pro změnu červenám až na zadku za "výdám".

How long of a lens do you use for these? I'm going out to photograph Painted Dogs in Africa and want to invest in some new lens ^^ Your pictures are always so crisp.

I see you on a Canon, I actually own a Pentax but I can find the equivalent lens.

If you don't mind me answering    She uses the canon "kit" lenses, for the most part, which is amazing. I am pretty certain she is using the canon 55-250mm, which is an excellent lens. I have to be honest too and say that for all the flack "kit" lenses get, they are pretty darn crisp and beautiful. I use the 18-55mm with great results for parties and such.

yes, she is right, but let's be honest: for a wildlife photography, it would be a bad lens, you would need much better. I dream about egtting better lens for years, but, well.. no money...

My bad. Usually if a description is short, I'll read it. No need to get worked up about it, I appreciate your eye though which is mainly the reason i didn't read the wall of text (no offense).

There is no nice way to say this so I'm just gonna say it: it's the mother's fault the kid died! Dumbass, the fence where there for a reason and if you have any kind of brain between your damn ears you know not to pass beyond the fence but stand behind it. But as usual, the one actually at fault don't want to take responsibility for their actions. I feel sorry for the kid but not the mother and she deserves to know the kid's death is on her and only her.

Ive been to Pittsburgh Zoo many times and Ive been to the enclosure. (They've torn it down since) And its a very sad thing that happened but I'm sorry but it WAS the mothers fault. That railing came up to an adults chest, she intentionally put her child pass the barriers and put him in harms way. And the parents are now trying to get money out of it, which I find appalling. No amount of money will bring their child back. Its a horrible thing that happened but the blame is with the mother in every way.

SamMetz In reply to SamMetz [2013-11-12 04:30:35 +0000 UTC]

If it had been a tiger or lion exhibit that she dropped her child in would you feel like it was more of her fault? If Michael Jackson dropped his baby from a balcony, would you blame the hotel? NO! what she did is called child endangerment and its really sad the child and the animals suffered for his mothers ridiculous actions! I understand she probably feels beyond horrible about it, but she needs to take responsibility for what she did. Im not being judgmental. I honestly just feel there is no room for sympathy for the person who caused it all when there are others who paid bigger price. The child and the animals are the ones that suffered the most.

Cypselurus In reply to SamMetz [2013-11-12 06:39:15 +0000 UTC]

Agreed. From what I hear, she's the one who put that poor kid at risk (her own son!) and now she's trying to sue the zoo over it? That's honestly kinda just sad.

US of A:  Maximum legal bogosity!  I always find it interesting that when people, all people, talk about what's right or morality, they fail to bring up up that both of these concepts are totally artificial, unlike, say, a wild animal's instinct to kill prey.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cypselurus In reply to Kitsuchan59 [2013-11-15 11:12:56 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! Animals don't have what's wrong or what's right (at least not what humans perceive), they just go by instinct or intelligence. There are animals with pack or social bonds (e.g. Crows, Wolves, Lions, etc.) but they aren't exactly the same as those of humans. 'Right or wrong' is something humans made up to justify their actions...applying them to animals is just silly.

I always think that African wild dogs are the most beautiful with that coat of colors they have, and those round tall ears they have.
Jeez why do you think the signs are for lady don't put your offspring on the railing every zoo has warnings not to pass a certain fence or to put things over said fence. you would think people would be a little more smarter about that, but I guess not and now she who I have no sympathy for her own stupidity paid the price she paid for.
