Description
African painted dog (or African wild dog, Lycaon pictus, pes hyenový), ZOO Dvůr Králové nad Labem, Czech republic.Few months ago, a kid fell into the enclosure of African wild dogs in some foreign ZOO - of course the predators ripped the kid apart. I would say something about the parents and their behavior, but I do not want to be sued

INFO ABOUT THE ANIMAL:
Name: African wild dog (Lycaon pictus)
Location: spots in Eastern and South Africa
Biotop: savanna
Size: 1.1 m long + 40 cm tail weight: up to 35 Kg
Diet: boars, antelopes, zebras, wildebeast, prey even bigger than the dog.
Conservation status: Endangered
Interesting facts: African wild dogs are very social animals, they live in pack with 6-80 members and usually only dominant pair breeds | African wild dogs are one of the most successful predators of the world, they usually manage to catch the prey in 80 % of the cases (for example only every 10th attack of the tiger is successful). African wild dogs do not have a good reputation, because they tend to rip the prey, eating it while it is still alive... | The population of African wild dogs is threatened because of feral domestic dogs which carry illnesses mortal to African wild dogs | Painted dogs are very fast runners.

Look at all the wonderful people in this comments section who've never done a stupid thing in their lives. It's so great to see so much compassion for animals that would rip people apart at a moment's notice and none for a fellow human being who just did something stupid and suffered dearly for it. It's obvious that it needs to be pointed out again and again that it was the mother's fault here. Oh look, what an idiot, some people shouldn't breed, durr hurr. JUDGEMENT!

when I do a stupid thing, I blame myself when I jump over double fence into the tiger's enclosure, I blame myself for my injuries, not the ZOO
THAT's the point

But were the dogs executed after that? Because I will be SO MAD if they did! They don't deserve to pay for the parent's stupidity!! (This sounds to damn cruel, sorry, but that's my opinion)

It looks like just one was killed and it was only so that the boy could be retrieved. The others were relocated to other zoo facilities.

It's very sad what happened at the Pittsburgh Zoo with these guys. That's the zoo I go to quite frequently, and I was so sad to hear about the accident. I have been to that enclosure many times, and I know that it was perfectly safe. I think it's so sad that people get mad when wild animals act on their instincts, and do what they're supposed to do. It's like when people get mad when one of the whale trainers at Sea World gets attacked. They are wild animals. Enter at your own risk. I personally, love them. I feel terrible for the mother who lost her child. I can't imagine how that is for her. But it's also sad that these guys got blamed, and that they had to be moved out of the zoo. I miss them.

It was. The mother put her child up on the railing and he fell in. One of the dogs was killed for her stupidity and the zoo relocated the other dogs.

A very very sad story. It must be harsh for the parents for their kid to lose life like that horrible way. I can't even imagine how traumatizing it must have been to see your young ripped apart right before your eyes. Blaming others (ZOO, the dogs) is one surviving methods to protect one's psyche in a situation like that. It would be highly unbearable for the mother to only blame herself for the accident. But I'm pretty sure also those thoughts are in her mind constantly.

I agree fully. Hindsight is always 20/20 and it's easy to look back and say "well if any of this list of things had been different...so on and so forth" but none of that can undo what happened.
Yes that mother shouldn't have put her child up there. I've never been to the Pittsburgh Zoo where this happened but at our zoo in Oregon every single exhibit that has any kind of open-air type deck like this one has multiple signs telling people not to climb or lean over these rails and a few specifically say not to hold things like cameras and children over them.
There are a number of lessons to be learned here and one of the important ones, I think, needs to be admitting fault. The mother is going to carry her guilt for the rest of her life and trying to blame the zoo instead will not make it easier. The zoo's reputation is now stained forever as well and even removing the dogs wont erase the past.
Nobody wins in this situation and I applaud the Allegheny County DA for calling it like it is: A tragic accident. And deciding not to pursue charges against either the mother or the zoo.

We don't know weheter she will be blaiming the zoo forever or just this period of time when she's too weak to take any more burden. It's part of the normal traumatic process where the last step is to move forward and be able to live with the past.

I second this, absolutely. Whether or not the parents are to blame for their recklessness, nobody deserves the kind of death their son suffered, nor the experience of witnessing it happen to a loved one. Compassion, and not finger-pointing or a blame game, is what is called for here.

Thank you, Neosoc. I can't believe how many sad, bitter people are so quick to just call other people out for their dumb mistakes - especially when the result of those mistakes is obviously punishment enough. Some people just have more heart for animals that would kill them at a moment's notice than their fellow human beings.

Thank you so much for saying this. I wish more people dealt with this situation like you do. I go to that zoo a lot, and I know that the enclosure was very safe. But calling the mother stupid names, and running her down will fix nothing, and will not bring her child back to life.

The mother held the kid up over the railing above the enclosure, so I don't see how it was the zoo's fault--but yes, she did sue them. It's sad, and I feel sorry for both the kid and the mother, but her blaming the zoo for her action isn't right nor will it bring the little boy back. They put up reasonably high fences, and common sense dictates you don't hold up child up over it.

Oh yes, I know all too well about the Pittsburgh zoo incident... I've been there and I blame the mother entirely. Who sets a kid UP on a high railing to see the dogs when all you have to do is hold them?? Thanks to her, the zoo has now lost its beautiful dogs... I'm so thankful I got to go there before they relocated them.

It was the Pittsburg Zoo in Pennsylvania here in the US. The mom had the kid up on the railing of the exhibit (where he SHOULD NOT) have been, wasn't paying attention, and the kid fell off the rail. There was a safety net, but the kid bounced off of it after falling from the rail and then fell into the exhibit. The pack of Painted dogs mauled the child and the zookeepers scared them away from the kid - all but one left the child alone and he was sadly shot. I did a research topic on Wild dogs a bit ago and read up on this story quite a bit. It was sad, but really it was the mother's fault.

The zoo was the Pittsburgh Zoo in Pennsylvania, USA (I'm literally an hour from the area). The story was that the mother, despite warning signs EVERYWHERE, lifted her child on to the railing overlooking the wild dog enclosure. The kid decided to lean forward and the mother lost grip, and the child fell in to the safety net below the railing, ended up bouncing off and in to the actual enclosure where the dogs went after him. The mother sued the zoo, despite it being HER recklessness that endangered her child, and at least one of the dogs was shot and killed in order to get to the child. The dogs have since then been relocated to other facilities, or so I hear. Still, it's a shame that the parent's recklessness caused all of this and cost a little boy his life. I for one don't blame the dogs; they acted on instinct.

That's because she's a fucking moron, and doesn't deserve the privilege of being around wild animals, even if in zoos. A little caution is necessary, of course, and I wonder why she thought the railing was there anyway? Idiot woman. Should not be breeding.
It is a shame that the dogs were blamed and one killed. They're not tame, AT ALL. Some people must think they're tame as a pet dog. Not so, obviously. It's a shame her irresponsible actions ruined the enclosure for every other guest (and guest to be) by closing it down and relocating the dogs.

I have heard that the zoo might put cheetahs in the exhibit instead. That's what the enclosure was first used for, anyway. Still, I'm going to miss the wild dogs... The zoo just got their red panda, and had they kept the dogs all 3 of my favorite animals would have been present in one facility.

There's no need for the bitter. I'm sure her kid was just short and wanted to see the dogs better. Yes it was irresponsible, but guess what, she's the one who lost her son. You don't think she must feel like she's a "fucking moron" every single day without people like you saying that in comments sections? Geez, it was just a mistake, and one she paid dearly for. I guess holier-than-thou people like you want to go act like you've never done anything dumb in your life though, huh? I hope you feel like you've earned your "privilege" to breed.

Actually.. the best part of it was that there was a gazebo with floor to ceiling windows she could have let the boy look from where he would have had a great view and been perfectly safe. This was more than a simple mistake.. it was a complete lack of thought.

FellFallow In reply to Channini [2013-11-12 09:15:22 +0000 UTC]
Risking your child's life because it wanted to see an animal? I'm sure she thought it through carefully- oh wait. She didn't, because clearly she had fuck all but static going through her mind when she decided it would be a good idea.
Also, you cannot compare risking your child's life to regular 'dumb things' people did. Get real. This kid died because his mother is a fuckwit, hence why she shouldn't have 'the privilege to breed' as you put it. We don't need even more idiots spawning and clogging the world up.

Hmm... my life was at risk throughout of my childhood... hanging off cliffs, getting close to dangerous animals, trying to pet poisonous snakes in the wild... obviously my parents tried to protect me, but hardly ever succeeded - if a child wants to do something, parents can either restrain the child completely, raising yet another case for psychiatrist, or just try to live a life, as it goes, hoping for the best. I was lucky most of the time.
It's very unfortunate, that that incident happened, but children die all over the world all the time.
Sometimes due to someone's fault. Sometimes - in accidents. Or catastrophes, when thousands die...
Everyone will die, sooner or later.
Pity the child, pity the mother, pity the dog's reputation, if you want.
But please, stop blaming someone and calling people names... Won't change a damn.
