Description
I am a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar...***** ***** ***** ***** *****
Felt like drawing ARIA, also felt like drawing Firefly, killed two birds with one stone and a time paradox (ARIA's set in 2301, Serenity's plated 2459). Actually I was suprised at how neatly the firefly design fits into the Aqua sky.
Yeah, I know, Serenity isn't particularly accurate, and it probably isn't very neighborly of her crew to be flying over a population centre with the reactor spill doors open, but I took some artistic license. With them closed she looks a bit wrong, like a 1980s 911 without the whale-tail.
Oh, for those who haven't yet seen Firefly/Serenity (and God of all things shiny help you if you haven't), you're really missing out. ---> [link]
What I was listening too ---> [link]
As for ARIA, that just has to be experienced.

Maybe because they're both sci-fis that aren't really sci-fi? (well, more so ARIA then Firefly... but you know what I mean, they're not tech centric)
Cheers a bunch mate

Looks great! I always like your "finished" stuff.
By the way, how do you get that kind of bloom lighting?

Cheers mate.
Bloom lighting? You mean the little reflections? Basically use a normal brush (or possibly the one that gets softer around the edges as you press harder, either will do) in photoshop to pick up the edge you want to be highlighting in white. Then use a large (I think I was using around 45-65px) soft white brush to just lightly dust the area around the highlight. If it's a particularly large bit, possibly use another soft brush to bring up the glow even closer to the highlight. Then it's just a matter of adjusting to taste. You can do it all on one layer, but I prefer to use two so I can adjust the highlight and glow seperately with the eraser.
Usually right at the end of the piece I go into levels and hack the ends off the histogram which really brings the whites and darks out.

Very nice, I like it indeed. I really love the brightness of the entire image and the way that Serenity is soaring out of the frame. It gives it a very 3-D 'look at me, i'm escaping the canvas!!' effect.
My boyfriend actually only just made me sit through Serenity. Surprisingly, I really liked it!

Cheers mate, I'm glad Serenity caught your attention that way. I was having serious issues trying to draw the viewer's attention to her rather than the girls in the foreground (where all the colour wound up being )
"Serenity" is a great movie. If you did enjoy it, try to look up the series "Firefly", just as funny and interesting, if not more so

I'd be shocked if i saw that scene in real life But I think it's unlikely we'll see that kind of ships in our life time T_T
Still... that's an awesome work! The coloring is so sweet that it almost looks real

Cheers mate. Heh, actually the curved panel wasn't going to be there, but I didn't draw far enough out at the bottom and angling it in cut out too much background for comfort, hence the curve

Love that ship. Course we don't know how old it is so it COULD have been around at that time, only as a newer vessel...

Ok, I'm about to show my geek-ness here. See, before I drew this I went and bought the blueprints book for Serenity... which includes builders' plates and a short history of the Firefly design.
Serenity keel was laid in August 2459, making her one of the first Mk3 Fireflys and she was first sold as The Betty before she was sold to Mal and re-named in 2473. So sadly shouldn't really be in Aqua's skies
Cheers mate.

Cheers mate. Yeah, the book of orthographic views, cutaways and cross-sections I got shows the movie Serenity. Unfortunately, and I didn't realize this when I bought it, there's no 3D views... so workingout how things go together was more than a little difficult
