Description
Working title: Facial Hair and Headbands.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The smallest class of craft considered to be a true "warship" in their own right, and unlikely pose much of a threat to capital ships, gunboats tend to be the realm of police, customs organisation and third-tier "system defence forces" in need of a cheap unit capable of dealing with the local riff-raff but unlikely to require jump capability. Since most gunboats are also small enough to make planet-fall under their own power, they are also well suited to governments unable to afford extensive orbital infrastructure.
In full, first-rate navies, gunboat squadrons tend to serve a fast responders, stationed around system extremities to deal with situations not requiring larger vessels, or that those larger vessels may not be able to reach in time. They are also one of the preferred training grounds for freshly minted officers, whom will move on as quickly as possible to bigger and better things, or those personnel command requires to be put away out of trouble. Some, however, choose to make a career out of their small steeds, though these are generally considered to be a bit... different.
Pictured is an Orca class gunboat wearing the colours of the 116th Titan Interceptors, stationed to said moon on Sol's outskirts. Built into the fast responder role, the Orca puts an emphasis on speed and firepower over endurance. The twin 700mm lasers are weapons more generally associated with the secondary armament of frigates and destroyers, which are supplemented by twin torpedo launchers. The ship also mounts twin ventral and dorsal point defence emplacements. With good crews, and flight of Orcas are generally capable of dealing with the garden variety or pirate, or of keeping larger quarry busy long enough for more powerful units to respond.
The Orca is powered by a two-stage fusion venturi, the first, smaller axial stage being used for cruising, with the larger venturi throat reserved for combat maneuvers. While giving the ship an exceptional acceleration, the system is a power-hog, and it is not unusual to see Orcas returning to base under tow, their inexperienced crews having held maximum combat power for a few seconds too long.

I dunno, I just felt like doing something generically "scifi". Blame Pacific Rim (or, at least, its soundtrack)... I do. Admittedly not exactly my finiest hour pose wise, but anyway...
For the record, the gunboat is based loosely on the design for a destroyer I intend to use elsewhere.

Venturi's first appearance? She's come a long way. Someday I'd like to hear her story.

That it is. Perhaps one day I'll nail her universe down enough to pump a story out of it... though I must admit part of me also likes leaving it a bit vague because it gives more flexibility in what can be done drawing wise.

Excellent artwork. I love the background you're putting into this.

I've got to admit, I'm having a lot of fun making up random bits of lore and world-building.
And letting myself get a bit space-operatic as well.

Yeah... there is a resemblance
To be honest, I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to character design at the time (mostly my brain was going spacesuits! starships!), so I probably defaulted to what I enjoy drawing... which is apparently petite girls with auburn hair and bob-cuts

I got a sort of FTL feel from it, honestly. *grins*

Ok, fine, I'll bite: what is this FTL thing?

Ridiculously addicting, intensely frustrating, and occasionally very satisfying. Not bad for a $10 US purchase.

For a split second there I thought this was based on FTL. Good job, though!

This is all kinds of awesome, and I am still super jealous of your shading.

Cheers mate.
I've been making a concious effort to try and make my shading more "painterly", if that makes sense: so blending less and using choppier, more defined brush strokes. I don't know if that's helpful at all?

I tried exactly that a few months ago, but I didn't get anywhere with it. You're rocking it

I've found it's a bit weird trying to get used to, particularly if you've been used to working with smoother gradients and textures. If you're like me, then you work in a higher resolution to what is eventually posted, and the first few times you try it, using more defined brush strokes kind of looks like arse... so you follow your natural instinct and try to smooth it out and make it look better which, when you zoom out again, looks nothing like you were going for. I find it helps to, at that stage where you're about to start smoothing things out, to zoom out and walk away from the computer for five minutes to force yourself to look at the picture as a whole, rather than at the little bit you were working on.

Nice composition overall! The star streaks and the twinkle of fiery afterburners is a nice wink and a nod to classic sci-fi art.
Pretty smart for the Orca to have fully armoured hulls; best to view things digitally than through vulnerable windows.
Whoa, 700mm huh That's a lotta dakka, assuming you mean the cannons' bore.
(I've been dying to do Pacific Rim fanart, or at least crossover silliness, but the comic takes priority over everything. ...at least the next page includes a Jaeger giant mech!)

I miss that sort of classic sci-fi art, blame growing up with the Terran Trade Authority
Well, it's armoured around the front, pretty exposed at the back. I guess I tend to err toward a lack of windows as a result of reading a lot of Honor Harrington books; where everything happens beyond visual range anyway, so the bridges tend to be toward the centre of the ship. Of course, when drawing, that makes for pretty boring visuals, but I still like the idea of putting the bridge somewhere near the centre.
Yeah, the thought was a 700mm bore. Perhaps as an offshoot of that "classic sci-fi" thing, the thought was for ships with a limited but powerful armament. In this case, I sort of picture a 700mm bore laser as being the sort of thing you might find on a destroyer's secondary armament, which would give couple of well-handled gunboats a decent chance against anything up to that class (read: anything likely to be operated by pirates, commerce raiders, or other folks on a limited budget and on the wrong side of the law)... it'll barely scratch the paint on a capital ship though.

Aye. I'm glad Pacific Rim brought back that classic feel in a modern package (and NOT include the shakey cam)
Hehe, that's cuz Orcas crews don't know the meaning of retreat!
There's a lot of cool designs that don't flaunt their bridge; though admittedly Design 101 usually asks that you include some sense of scale. (Your landing strut-ladder was a good way to do that)
Oh, okay. My brain had to adjust for the metric system. XD; Looks about right~!

I did enjoy that Pacific Rim remembered that thing known as a "wide angle lens"...
Yeah, I guess showing bridge windows is a pretty good/fast way of indicating scale, though it also begs the question if those windows are just like a car windscreen, or three storeys high. Putting little people in them would probably help maybe
