Description
This illustration brought to you by the main theme from Pacific Rim.
An Orca gunboat alert crew of the 116th Titan Interceptors prepare to depart their ground side base on short notice, just behind their sister ship.
Cheap, expendable and requiring minimal manning, gunboat squadrons were positioned around populous systems such that they could cover major spacelanes and arrive in a matter of hours, though often this would require pushing the tiny ships beyond their powered endurance. As such, an interceptor scramble would regularly be followed closely by either tugs or tankers such that the manned missiles could return home.

Final one before I go back to work. Wow I am never trying to work out perspective on a spherical screen again. As the Orca has no exterior windows, the idea was that the bridge should have a spherical view screen instead, centred on the helmsman's position... everyone else is going to have to put up with some distortion. Unfortunately, all I managed to do was confuse myself. Not my finest illustrative moment and, to be honest, I'm kind of glad to see the back of it now...
As an aside, each Orca has a crew of three: Commander, engineer and helm; with the helm and commander sharing responsibility for tactical and astrogation. As a result, instead of a rating, the ships are often helmed by a sub-lieutenant, fresh off their midshipman's cruise and in need of experience.

I'm being dense, but is Venturi the helmsman or 'Stache? Â (I'm betting Grandpa is the Captain.)

Venturi is the helmsman. I picture this as being her first proper posting as a commissioned officer (so her snotty cruise not withstanding). She's probably on a tactical stream so, per the description, she's helming in the place of a rating... hence why her seat is also at the centre of the view-screen bowl, so she gets the least distortion off it. As for the other two: 'Stache is the boat's commander and Grandpa is the flight engineer.
I figure these three represent a cross-section of the types of people typically found in gunboat squadrons: those just passing through (Venturi... probably), those who have been binned for reasons real or imagined ('Stache), and the lifers... those who actually prefer the gunboats (Grandpa).

Heh, thanks very much.
God I feel so guilty, I've not had time to leave comment in your gallery for ages. In anyone's for that matter

Hey no problem! I'm just glad you're still making art. Your style is so fresh and really nice to look at.

For what it's worth, the "360° view screen" effect did come through

Alien was on the other day.
As to the bridge design - having helm out front with a "IMAX" style view is a very logical one since nothing beats the Mark I Eyeball.
Depending on the size, you could have the helmsman out front with the Commander and Engineer on the step above - the Commander facing out and the engineer facing back (for more console / wall space for controls). But as designed it works equally well, IMO.

Cheers Kisk.
Heh, oddly though I did toy with having the Engineer face backward: it would make sense and would have allowed me to make the bridge even smaller and more cramped to boot. Visually however I did not feel it worked as well, plus I kind of like having the Engineer where he is as it echos where the flight engineer used to sit in many aircraft, and leaves space behind the Commander for a couple of jump-seats should they need to carry more people.

Neat especially the amount of details you put into the background.

I like this, I like it a lot. Just curious, are you taking inspiration for the bridge design from Martian Successor Nadesico?

Honestly, I had not even thought of Nadesico until you mentioned it. If you're talking about the step down to the helm position, it was really just to give the commander a better view, and visually open up the picture a bit more.
Cheers mate, I'm hoping to do more with these characters.

I do like the bubble design for the bridge. Nice touch.

Dayumn! A gorgeous space vista (all the easier to see the face of your enemy barreling at you)
Haha @ the 'manned missles'. I can't help but think 'crew expendable' comes up a lot in the mission statements. (the bridge itself reminds me of the Nostromo's bridge from Alien, only much less grime and no random pornography pinned to the consoles) ŠP

It's probably worth noting at this juncture, that the only reason this got finished was because you went and did a massively detailed crowd pic, and I decided I wasn't allowed to whinge about doing the details.
Heh, I guess "crew expendable" is  a good, easy way of pointing out how serious the situation is/how ruthless the commanders are.
Man, it's been ages since I saw Alien.

Everything's going according to plan~
Victory is everything...!
I had to rewatch it recently for all the deleted scenes. I'm a completionist like that.
