Description - Wacom graphics tablet... God knows how much
- PSCS2... bought on a student discount.
- A year and a half to practice... 20% of University marks
- Getting halfway into a contest submission and realizing that it was all for nought 'cause you've got the PhotoShop ability of a concussed hamster... PRICELESS.

My entry into "Dress up Mikuru" contest.

I've been wanting to do something 70's with Haruhi for awhile now, so it wasn't too hard to drop Asahina into an approximation of a period British WPC's uniform and switch around the original thumbnail ideas so that Kyon and Yuki were in the background rather than the foreground. Plus it's been ages since I entered a club contest

I'm still finding my feet with PhotoShop, so not 100% happy with how it turned out... but I have now worked out what the smudge tool is for

Title is a reference to The Who and the song that's been running on repeat for the last week

Crits, Comments and Chocolate (laced with whiskey) always welcome.

Wraith 11

EDIT: Hmm, checked this out on the uni computers. On my flatscreen CRT it looks nicely dirty, rundown and industrial. In the brighter LCD it just looked... odd O_o

Mikuru Asahina, Yuki Nagato and Kyon (c) Kyoto Animation and whatever...

Cheers mate, the 70s was a very cool era for motoring. From memory the car is a Ford Consul GT, based on the car used in the British TV series "The Sweeny".

Definately worth it.

I always appreciate it when an artist puts in the time in the technical and mechanical elements of a picture, and doesn't fudge anything. I might be the only one who notices it, but it makes a huge difference to me.

...you can't see them very well but there's also little upside-down ones in the headlight reflectors too

Consul GT actually, it's what you bought if a Cortina didn't have enough power. I think it instead ran the 3L V6 from the Capri... I think. I'd never even heard of it till I watched The Sweeney

Cheers mate.

Cool perspective, love the tilted angle of the scene.

I love the overall atmosphere of the picture, being used to your pencils, that your take on Photoshop is well done. It adds depth to the pic... Kudos.

Yes, it looks decidedly British, dark background, industrial decay and all... reminds me of my room.

Again, its a COOL pic.

Have to add, background is good, but i dont think too many places look THAT British in britain. ... that didnt really make sense did it?

i think mostly the middle of cities look kinda like that. i dunno the only city i really go to most is Manchester so...

okay im shutting up. tell you what, just never listen to anything i say okay?

wraith11 In reply to Dark-Magick04 [2007-09-30 14:01:16 +0000 UTC]

To answer both questions at once: the background was actually based on what I can remember of the time travel sequence in "Life on Mars" With the run down factories being bulldozed to make way for the highway. The ABC over here screened it a little while ago, and I caught the last 40mins or so of the last episode. Watched a bit on YouTube since then and am trying to track down the box-set so I can watch the rest

I saw a boxset in Dymocks a few weeks ago, but that was in Sydney. But if I remember, it should be at an ABC shop.

Aikurisu [2007-09-30 13:09:59 +0000 UTC]

Awesome perspective as always, mate. I'm envious of how you get those groovy background borders in focus too. Gives the art that certain edge that's rare among many other artists. The car and the background really comes together well, although there's something about the main building that makes it look like it was made out of chocolate. You're definitely improving in your colour art. The overall colour of the characters is fairly vibrant and the way you did the clothing brings their textures out good and proper.

wraith11 In reply to Aikurisu [2007-09-30 14:04:41 +0000 UTC]

Cheers mate...
...mmmm, chocolate building *drool*

Might be the lack of detail in it, who knows. Yeah, I was trying a few different things bits and pieces on this (including trying that metalwork tutorial you gave me awhile back)... needless to say not all of them came out as planned

WES

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aikurisu In reply to wraith11 [2007-10-01 05:08:43 +0000 UTC]

Ah, but is it a standard milk chocolate building, or a rich chocolate building with laced whiskey? Probably sounds more reasonable for that era anyway.

Glad if that short tutorial is helping, btw.

One thing that could definitely help here is using brush textures. It's cheap, but simple, as they prove really helpful when it comes to adding more realism to certain things, like walls and cloth fabrics. I haven't really seen much use for them though for shiny surfaces, like cars. What you've done for the vehicle here looks great enough as it is.

well seeing as i have even less photoshop tallent than you (lets say concused retarded hamster on crack), all i have to say is YEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! BAM BADUM BWaaaaaaM!
Man I love that song its the song that i have assigned most of my likely hearing damage to. find every volume control you can find and turn it up to 100% and then a little bit more just for good measure. favourite who song ever!
also I guess you're still craving life on mars too.
hmm can i borrow melencholy off you at some point.
final nots this picture is bitchin (now its finally loaded in full view, damn you optus ) love the background (very british) and the detail (H2G2 ftw)

It is a horribly easy song to give yourself hearing damage with... and possibly arm damage when you slam the desk playing air-guitar

Kyon should really take that... it's probably the best advice he's going to get all day.

Shall bring it 'round next time.

I think who songs should come with a warning "windmill air guitar is dangerous to both the practicer and others please exercise caution in its use"

"it succeed's over the older and slighlty pedestrian text in two important ways it is slightly cheaper and has the words DON'T PANIC in Friendly letters on the front cover" love that quote.

i actually find that i can get nicer, quicker, and more complicated-looking blends by using a semi-transparant brush set to linear burn, and being careful with it...i used to smudge all the time, but when you want to smudge a lot, it can lag horribly especially over large areas...

that said-this looks pretty fantastic...'specially that car...dang but that looks good...and the building too...
