Description
Hi guys! This is a new set of 12 artworks I did for the new Star Wars Essential Reader's Companion. Although the dateline for this book was a lot tighter it nevertheless was an enjoyable and rewarding experience. As with the last book I will be posting them in the order of sequence as it appears in the Reader's Companion. Enjoy!
This scene is from The Courtship Of Princess Leia and it is the first proper depiction of Teneniel Djo, witch of Dathomir and future Queen Mother of the Hapes Consortium. Luke Skywalker, who was checking out the wreckage of the Chu'unthor, is caught off guard by her sudden appearance and barely dodges a kick to the face. This is totally an unfair match-up but Miss Djo has no clue who she's dealing with.
For those who don't know there is actually an existing depiction of Teneniel Djo but it is a black and white sketch done back in the 90s. The publisher felt it was not reflective of how she's described in the books and so we gave her a little update and sexed her up just a wee bit so this result of it.

She ought to look a tad bit more ripped. And when are we getting that apology for the New Jedi Order series?

I just wonder what's the sense of jumping like this on enemy?
Still really nice artwork

Very cool! It's a fine time to see a good pic of Teneniel Djo, who is one of the Dathomir witches (one of the good ones), and the enemies of the Nightsisters (the evil witches). I am eager to get that book now!

Wow! This is an amazing piece! The level of detail is astounding, and the colors look great.
I do have a problem with the woman's pose, though. It just seems ... really awkward. Like she's leaping sideways, and half-turned in midair to look at Luke? Her non-kicking foot also looks a little ... ouch. It just doesn't look right, for some reason. Another thing would be the perspective on Luke, which looks a little off, at least to me (It seems like he's about to fall over).
Sorry, I know this probably sounds nitpicky, and I don't mean to "bash" you or anything, because it really is an awesome picture! (more than I could ever hope to do!) I just wanted to point out a couple things that didn't look right to me.
Nonetheless, amazing job!

I can definitely see what you mean there - particularly the Luke perspective. I think it's mostly the head that's throwing it out, it just seems too large compared to the hands.. especially considering that they're closer to the viewer. Something about the position of Teneniel's head seems a little bit off aswell - I'm not sure whether it's too low, too high, or too far to the left, but whenever I look directly at her it just feels sort of.. detached.
All in all though it is a wonderful painting. Well done! (I love cheeky little R2 in the background. )

If she has no idea what she's dealing with, then she epically failed the spot check on the yard o' green superhot plasma her opponent is wielding.

jedi vs dathomir witch. classic! His father faced Assaj Ventress, so i find it fitting Luke would face off with a Dathomir witch sometime in his life.

Her mid air fight pose seems weird and awkward. But the colors are sweet.

Wow, I still have my paperback copy of The Courtship of Princess Leia, and remember this scene even though it's been ages since I've last read it. This is amazingly well done!

Ooh, wow! I love seeing scenes from the Star Wars books interpreted into visual medium, and I dare say this might be the best one yet! Amazing, you captured them all and the scene perfectly!

I like the scene in the book where, after she captures Luke and the Prince, she sends that image into Lukes mind of her intentions.

AWESOME!! I always loved this battle, and the way these two interacted--what a fabulous illustration! The red hair, her (obviously) tremendous strength and agility, and her self-confidence all depict her beautifully--I really like how you've costumed her, too. Luke's defensive stance is just how it's written in the narrative--he COULD cleave her in two with his superior weapon, but hesitates...point then to Teneniel! This is wonderful, with the wreckage of the ancient ship, the frozen moment of attack, and trusty R2 no doubt bleating in alarm! Great work, marvelous composition and framing--instant !

I always thought that the witches of Dathomir had the black and white paint on their faces. . .
Anyways, incredible work!

Those are the Night Sisters of Dathomir who are also witches. There are many witches on Dathomir; some are dark side users others are not.
