Description
When Anaita signed the contract with the devil it didn’t just bind her to him, it bound all of her to him. Her existence was bound to him in all possible realities, this is one such reality. It was a gray snow covered afternoon when Anika (アニカ) took her first breath. Her father and mother smiled at their legacy. Anika was born as the 5th generation of Demon hunters of their clan, rigorously trained from a young age to scour land to track and hunt demons. She followed her Sensei’s teachings to the T and carried out every order with precision and finesse, her parents were delighted at her rapid progress. Despite her innate talent for the teachings she longed for something else. In secret she took up a flute and let her creative mind run wild. As years passed and her training neared its climax she was tasked with her final teaching, and first mission. Hunt and kill a demon.
Dressed in the ceremonial outfit she left her village, packing only supplies for three days and her flute. She traveled town to town, a constant barrage of rumors of miscellaneous demons. Out of all of them one peaked her interests, an old woman told her of an old demon living in a shrine in the mountains above the village. She quickly departed and scoped out of the abandoned shrine. There didn’t seem to be anything. She waited for the sun to set before making her move, playing idly on her flute in the meantime. When the moon had risen to its peak she heard a noise. A fox, yipping to the melody of her flute. She stopped playing but the yipping continued, she slinked from her tree and approached the shrine entrance. She dare not make a sound, the yipping still continuing. She slowly crossed through the shrine coming closer to the yipping, she peeked around the screen door which stood ajar. A white fox sat there yipping contentedly mesmerized by her tune.
“This was the demon, no fox is this smart” she thought to herself. She unsheathed the demon killing blade and prepared to strike a swift clean blow to the neck but, what the fox demon did next made her pause. It started to howl, it was the same melody but altered a sad lonely version of the once upbeat yipping. She lost her footing and the fox turned to stare at her. The moment she met its gaze a pressure began to build in her head, as a voice spoke to her. “So you’ve come? A member of that demon hunter clan that butchered my family. Please end me, and let me be at peace.” She tensed her grip on the sword and charged, the fox didn’t move it sat there eyes closed its peace made. She stopped short, she couldn’t bring down the blade. The pressure on her increased, making her wince. She collapsed to her knees in front of the demon, her sword clattering across the floor. Tears rolled down her cheeks, she could feel the overwhelming sadness coming from the demon, utter loneliness. The fox stood up and licked her tears away, “it’s alright, you’re the first human to show me compassion in years.” It let out a slight smile as the pressure in her head exploded and 2 fluffy white fox ears sprouted from her head, she fainted.
When Anika awoke, the white fox was lying on her chest curled up into a ball. They were surrounded in a white fluff that was the softest thing she has ever felt. She stroked it, sending a chill up her spine. Was this her tail? Memories shifted into place, that’s right it is. She looked realized she was wearing new clothes, her demon hunting apparel was replaced with a black kimono with a red trim as well as a black choker with a silver ring on the end. Her long white ears twitched picking up the tiniest noises, a rabbit burrowing under the snow, a distant bird singing a song, and the fox’s breathing. A slow steady rhythm. Who was this fox? She pondered, the memory surfaced, that’s right this is her master, the one she shares all her time with. She smiled, and laid her head back down, she didn’t dare move as to not wake her lovely master.
