Memorial to the Murdered Jews of EuropeBerlin, Germany, 2019

This memorial is one to be treated with silence, and is a meditative---reflective--monument. Great stone blocks fill a plaza, blocking out sight, and varying in shape and size. The paths between each one dips and rises unexpectedly, making you walk carefully, unsure of how to step next. This seemingly simple (at first glance) set up is haunting and incredibly effective. I arrived with a small tour group and we all entered at different areas, alone. The stone, in the summer heat, instantly cooled, creating pockets of deafening silence in the busy city center. While people were certainly all around me, I couldn't see them. I couldn't hear them. The uneven path makes you trip, creating a feeling of being unsure of where you are going, and a slight concern. Most striking is when you saw a flash of color, someone else passing through the stones, many paths away, quickly out of sight.

The masses who were thrown together, forced out of their lives and terminated... the stories exist here in these stones, quietly reminding and vividly capturing the feeling of being pressed into a crowd of strangers (the stones) and a great feeling of unknown/uncertainty. Incredible design. Heartbreaking purpose.
