Description
I spent five months abroad last year. My daydreams were my reality. Back home, these are my thoughts and where I am now.
Since I came home two months ago, I don't know what to do with everything I experienced last year while I was abroad for five months. It is far from my normal life at home and I haven't figured out how to set out or use what I collected during my wanderings. I have a literal mountain of journals that I keep in a chest and I haven't even cracked one open. To write one blog for my website, I close the computer every time or put down my pen because I can't think of where to focus or to begin.
Before I ever traveled, and when I was super convinced I would never get the chance, I remember meeting people who had traveled. For example, I met someone who has been to a different country. I got the feeling as if I was staring into a bright light. This was not in the idolization of the individual who had traveled. It was the blasting light of wonders, ideas and overwhelming thoughts of I-don't-know-anything-about-this. I could barely manage to ask, "Did you enjoy it?" Creating any question in the face of something so unknown to me like travel was inconceivable.
I see and understand similar scenarios when I am asked about my trip. I think it goes both ways. It is hard to talk about them believe it or not because I am blinded by the complex question of "how was your trip?" I panic and think, what trip? Was it real? Where did I go? Oh gosh, how can I even compact it into a single expressible phrase? Then to the person asking the question, that is usually the only question I will get. I don't expect anything else. How do you talk about such a thing? Good, bad, or totally normal?
I mostly remember being hungry lol but then I remember all the amazing conversations I devoured with strangers, and fantastic parks, crypts, and corners of the world I strolled. I enjoyed the world when it rained, snowed, the leaves fell, the sun burned, and more. I spent every day on the streets or in the woods, hardly ever going inside and never sitting still.
In short--let's cut through these wandering thoughts--the most digestible part of my memories are my photos. They give me bite-sized stories in each one. Also, it is the only organized thing I have. My mum surprised me when I returned with complete printed photo albums from each city I went to. Photo albums and a select few of her favorite photos blown up to 5x7s and hung sparingly in my room.
As for the writing, I feel too close to the experience. As you can tell, it all wanders in my thoughts right now. I'm unable to sharpen or pinpoint any striking ideas.
It's funny that my fantasy stories feel and sound more realistic in comparison. My book takes much of my free time currently but someday soon I will surface from that and consider the reality I dreamed about and lived back in 2019.

"I mostly remember being hungry" lol when I went to Israel for ten days in September, I left with my favorite memories being the food and the people I was around. the sights were amazing, but the food and the people...they were phenomenal. I can't even imagine going on a 5 month long trip and trying to answer how the trip went. My 10 days were hard for me to answer that question about.....and your's was 150ish?? Your photos are lovely and I am SO glad you got to go on that trip. It must have been incredible Do you think you'll be wanting to go back at some point? or see more of the world?

Wow, that sounds like an amazing trip!! Food and people always are the highlights What an incredible place to go to!
Haha it really is mind-boggling!! It is such an out of this world experience. It's a mix of fantasy with real life. I'm sure you can relate when I say this, the first time I traveled, I went on a school trip for 3 weeks to the UK. I thought it was impossible and when I was there and when I got home I thought I had traveled enough for a lifetime because it would take the rest of my life enjoying and unpacking all of those memories and thoughts!
I'm really glad you are enjoying my photos! I have countless more to share!
Yes and YES! I came back drained I'll admit but ten days later somehow my travel bug returned I couldn't believe it haha. I work remotely so I can travel this year. I'm going back to Ireland in a month as a guide and chaperone for my alma mater Hiram College's trip. And then I booked super cheap dream tickets to go live with several friends and my best friend in Japan for a month. I'm psyched! But as I am sure you can tell, I'm a bargain shopper. That is probably why I was hungry a lot because I try to spend very little but luckily my favorite part is endlessly roaming the streets or hiking paths. I love museums so I will pick one to pay to go to but my favorite thing is the normal streets and parks and people I meet doing so
If I may ask, what made you pick Israel? Such a vibrant culture! Were you traveling with a group or was it on a whim? How exciting!
Thank you for your kind comment too!

Sorry for the super late response! haha life has been keeping me so busy. I can totally relate to feeling like I had traveled enough for a lifetime and thinking that it would take the rest of my life to enjoy and unpack all the memories and thoughts. My mom is still writing down all her memories in a journal from the little 10 day trip. I've got the travel bug again definitely. I'm chaperoning 5 teenagers in Washington D.C. next month for a week in a Civil Air Patrol (U.S. Air Force Auxiliary) cybersecurity trip, so I'll get to do some neat sight-seeing there, I think, when I'm not super busy keeping the kiddos in line. lol.
I hope you have a fabulous couple months traveling throughout Ireland and Japan! I am also a bit of a bargain shopper...it makes traveling soooo much more fun, I think. I think so much more self/free exploration goes on that way. It is so neat that you have the opportunities to go traveling again!! It is so neat that your alma mater is having you go to Ireland as a guide and chaperone for an international trip. I don't think my alma mater is going to give me any such opportunities. you're lucky
My mom has always wanted to go to Israel, and she definitely wants to go back someday. My family's religious and it was a religious tour. All the other tour members knew each other, so when we got there, we got to meet the rest of the group for the first time. We only knew 2 of the 3 tour organizers. I also went there knowing that I would be rooming with someone I'd never met before, but she was great and we had a lot of laughs together. I might be visiting her in Oregon in late May/early June and I'm super excited for that. She has a cow that runs around in her front yard. She's just great lol.

no worries! I completely understand Life takes us away sometimes but that's alright!
That's awesome, I hope your D.C. trip goes well! I'm just like your mom, I usually sit down after a trip and write for days on end trying to take it all in.
Thanks! We had to reschedule the Ireland trip to sometime in the summer. I was supposed to leave this Saturday but with all the Coronavirus fears going on the school I'm chaperoning with decided to cancel, which I understand. I think they will be going to DC instead but I won't be tagging along to that.
All that aside tho, I am sooo excited for Japan!
That trip must have been so amazing for you wow That sounds like such a great experience with the roommate. My favorite part is the people I meet while abroad, met the nicest people. Aw that's amazing that you might see her! I wish you the best of fun with that trip. Aww omg that will be awesome

Well my DC trip has been cancelled, too... Sooo many things are being cancelled now and it sucks having to announce to people that things are cancelled, to tell people they might not be headed back to the University campus soon, etc. I hope you still make it to Japan!! Everything is so crazy... I hope normal life and amazing travels get to be unhindered, like they used to be, much sooner than later..

bummer! Yeah all the changes are so insane. I feel for everyone who is graduating this year too, what a nightmare.
Thank you! I have my fingers crossed. They seem to have things pretty under control but we don't yet in the states. I hope it all clears up soon. Glad measure are being taken and hope it all happens quickly.
