Description Sooooo...I had made a comment on one of *Losmios deviations about her wing structure. And she suggested I make a tutorial for it...so I did...

Huzzah! It's WSTopDeck's Pegasus Wing Tutorial!

So, the basic premise of my doing this is that I see SO many pegasus drawn with completely non-functional wings. It bothers the crap out of me. Now, I admit right off the bat that I am not an expert in bird wing anatomy, but I understand the basic structure and function. SO! On with it then I guess XD

In image one you'll see a long red oval. For me this is the ideal connection point for a wing. The front of the wing follows the curve of the shoulder. Think along the lines of the wing being attached by a joint to the top of the shoulder blade.

In the second image, you can see the basic frame of the extended wing. You'll notice that it is already about the length of my horse's body. Ideally the full wingspan should be 2-3 times the body length. It'll look more functional at least.

Third image I put a base to work off of (which is actually too thin, but as it will be covered by feathers I didn't place too much importance on it).

Image four is the basic layout of feathers. I tend to use heavier bird's wings for ref. Think raptors, storks, swans, parrots, etc. Lean away from songbirds and other small avians.

The fifth image is just a more finalized look. Notice how the wing stays the same width until it reaches the body? This is how birds maintain lift. The base of the wing should NEVER narrow when it reaches the body! That goes against flight itself.

You'll see in the sixth image how the wings should 'merge' over the top of the back.

The last four images are (in my opinion) bad wings. The structures would never support flight. The last one is the one I see often and is the one that bothers me the most. >_<

Um...so yeah...I hope this helps in some way. I know it's not the most spectacular tutorial out there XD It's still best to use real wings for reference, there are plenty of great references in the stock gallery

I LOVE YOU ;-; I rarely see people draw wings on horses correctly so this is a bonus! <3

This is extremely useful!
I do have a question, though. How and where would a rider sit? Or would it be impossible for a rider to sit properly on a winged horse?

Ahh I do the last one when I draw feather wings *face palm* Ah but now that you mention it, I understand what you mean with it not looking proportional/in able to fly.. though I haven't drawn wings in ages I wont make that mistake again fer sure

Nice tutorial. This explains how is tricky to draw feathered wing. The down sized wings bored me a lot. I saw many in Google when i was surfing in the internet.
This pegasus tutorial is so far one of the best tutorial of the bird wing i know. I will ref the birds wings for the fantasy creature like griffons, pheonixs, pegasus and in the some case, the dragons in the future to change the demon wings who i commonly draw in my most dragons.

Thank you! It bugs me, too, when I see drawings of pegasus and dragons where the wings get really thin where they connect to the body. There's no way it could fly like that and that's not how birds' wings are shaped, anyway. I think the pegasus in the new Clash of the Titans movie has wings that get thin at the base, which bugs me when I see the previews for it on TV.

Kudos... I was just complaining about this to a friend of mine... I see so many wings (feathered or otherwise) that have no logical connection to the body... alll the way back along the spine for webed bat type wings, and with feathers they shouldn't taper to a point at the shoulder joint... least I'm not the only person it drives nuts.

I'm not quite sure, but I think these wings could also work for those of us that want to draw more draconic or bat-like wings on their horses. The joint placements seem to be very much the same.

THANK YOU. For putting this out there. I see a lot a great work that gets ruined by sloppy wingstructure (like Many-Of-Me said, in both Pegasi and Dragons!). It bothers the crap out of me too >< So thank you!
