Description EDIT: This one is taken!

One of two bone hairforks that I've been working on recently.
The idea is that the client will pick one, and the other will be for sale in my Etsy shop and here on DA.

Please excuse the photo. I'm going to try again tomorrow morning for a better shot of this, as I'm not really happy with this photo but was too eager to share it to wait another day.

The other one has a slightly different shape, and will have a more angular knotwork for the main panel. I'll post a pic of it when it's finished as well.

The knotwork for the main panel was designed from scratch for this fork by my husband Phillip, as he's better at designing knots for enclosed shapes than I am.

The black detailing is black Testor's enamel.
The bone is bone left over from the mounting process for taxidermy mounting, from an area of the bone on the ridge of the nose in large herbivores. This could be elk, caribou or large African antelope as I bought the bones in a mixed box from *Zhon . None of the animals were killed just so I could carve their bones, and I consider the use of the bones as a way to honor the animal by not wasting their parts.

Both of them together:

Wait...
So, were you selling the Bone Hairfork AND the Knotwood, or just the Bone Hairfork?

Just the hairfork. Knotwork is the style of decoration on it. The Burlwood behind it is just for display. And this piece has already sold.

This one isn't for sale yet, but making a bun is really very easy. I could go find you a couple decent and easy diagrams if you like.

Again, this is just lovely, almost minimalist in its sparing grace. I'd wear that in a heartbeat.

How, exactly, do you apply the enamel paint to the bone? I'd love to try a similar technique, but I'm a bit short on instruction. Can you recommend a tutorial source?

Glad you like it!

I use a tiny brush, and quickly wipe away any over-runs with my fingers.
I honestly don't know of a tut on it, but I could try to get my hubby to take pics while I'm doing the next one.

Well, I'm sure I can pick it up to some extent through trial and error. I'd love to see any photos you end up taking, but don't go to extra effort on my account.

That is very impressive work. Must have taken a while too I imagine. How long is it btw? Its hard to tell size from the picture.

Several months of work on and off.
It's about 6" long.

Very nice piece of work, something quite at home in an elven forest or on the plains of Rohan.

Aww, thanks! Wait till you see the third fork on my bench, the one that doesn't fit the requirements of the commission.
