Description
I've tried to make this one work with choir, but nothing I've done the past month has been able to match the wonder from the n64 era. Hence I've dropped it completely and gone my own way, I have though worked very hard on the strings and I hope this is not a huge disappointment for any of you.Let me know whether this is a hit or shit.

Very awesome! I've had problems with viewing your media player on DA so I looked at the linked site with your songs. I prefer Temple of Time more than Gerudo Valley, the later is missing something. But that you are making songs with one of those keyboards is cool, I accidentally toasted my keyboard a few years ago...

The site hosting the files renew the links once a while to prevent what I'm doing with the player, but I've sorted this out for my new project. A person was willing to set me up with a server with unlimited space and bandwidth for free. Just speed restrictions below 270 KBps
I only wish my keyboard had a mod wheel, support for sustain and had pressure sensors. Its a pain tweaking these manually in the software.
Speaking of sites I'm working on something new that is yet to be finished. Its in beta stages and going to stay there for a while, so don't expect much yet.

Awesome, I was getting tired with the issues.
Oh, how bad. Your music is truly awesome but some elements still feels a bit stale(? I cannot really describe it very good).
Cool site by the way! It looks very nice to be in the beta stages still, I didn't have any trouble navigating.

I wish I had a site I could distribute it like here. It was all good until I noticed it was against TOS to have music on DA.

I really like it...it's almost like the choir is implied, because in some points in the game they almost did seem more like an instrument than voices...if that makes sense?

Cool! One I would really like to see though, is Sheik's theme. Y'know, whenever he/she/it pops up that music always comes on the harp?

i think it really captures the feeling of the original with the instrument. i can imagine the choir, don't worry, this piece doesn't need it

Yeah the adding of the choir would improve this and give it justice to the original. But saying that, it sounds really good.
The timing is spot on from what I can tell and the vibrato of the instrument is perfect. Do you play the Cello or did you create this with a midi keyboard or something?

Not the same without the echoing choir in the background. but still, pretty good. Would love to have more depth to the sound

I'm not a premium member so I can't write a formal critique, but I can at least leave a comment with some thoughts. So here goes.
First of all, I think it's lovely. The strings have a positively gorgeous tone, and I for one like the reverb. It adds a pleasant, haunting touch to the piece.
Second of all, I'm not sure what medium you're working with--whether it's digital, or if this is something you've recorded off a live instrument and polished up, or what-have-you. Also, I don't know how true to the original you're trying to stay, so I don't know how much of my opinion is actually applicable to what you're doing.
But anyway! It seems a little repetitive. In the game the song pretty much just repeats I know, and has just the two base parts, but I think if you wanted to make it stand on its own without a game/story going on in the foreground you'd have to do something to add interest and color. Shy of actually writing more into it, I'd say dress it up a little--particularly the middle. Perhaps add a second string part, or even another instrument to it to give it some rise and fall. Changes in dynamics could also help quite a bit. It could be mesmerizing.
The simplicity is very... poignant, but some of the dramatic features seem overused. For instance, breaking between the phrases for that moment of silence lends a very dramatic effect which I think is quite beautiful, but you use it at the end of every phrase. I think it would be more powerful if you limited it to just one or two phrases--probably at the end, since that's where songs most often need the poignancy.
Finally, I'm hearing some kind of interference or noise on the last note of the main theme. Whatever that note is, every time you play it, I hear some kind of sound behind it. The first time I heard it, I actually thought you'd put the choir in this version after all, because that's what it sounds like--like a man singing quietly in a choral style just behind the note. But it's just the one.
Anyway, I hope that helps!

awesome!!
i really love it ^^
the strings worked out really great~
but what if you (somehow) added... reverbrations?
making it sorta echo... ya know?
it just sometimes... drops, and i don't think you want that to happen

Theres already a bit to much reverb imo, but an echo could be a good addon.

It feels so serious, like I'm walking through the temples ruins in as a far distant Link reincarnation-- and yet there's a lightness that can allow it a place at the height of the temple's glory. Either way, it invokes awe.

The Songbird one looks beautiful and from what I've seen it seems to be the best looking OoT replica AND its apparently one of the best tuned ocarinas out there
Would love to hear you play sometime!
I'm $15 away, certainly am looking forward to playing it myself

HellsPlumber In reply to X-a-v-i-o-r [2010-10-20 01:41:17 +0000 UTC]
I've always found N64 midi system odd. For example, when characters sing it sounds terrible but for some reason it actually seems to work XD
It's impossible to explain why but it just does.
This really isn't as bad as you seem to think it is. Some parts (1:44 for example) sound to distanced from the next note/part, like it could use a little extra echo or reverb in there to carry it over to the next part. In the game the song itself it what gave the Temple of Time it's atmosphere not just due to the feel of the music but the acutal atmospheric effects added to it.
Think it just needs a little bit of tweakin and it'll be perfect, stop being so hard on yourself

X-a-v-i-o-r In reply to HellsPlumber [2010-10-20 01:45:57 +0000 UTC]
Did you know the n64 also uses hardware to make its sounds? I think rogue squadron was among the few games who had its own software music.
Well I try to follow the original work a certain extent, but here I really scrapped that and went with something different. I'll consider it a temp setback until I get better software or greater skills.
