Description !!!Download for best quality!!!

Tonight the sky was crystal clear so me and went to take some pictures of the night sky.

Well this is my first astro-photography and I must say I was really lucky to get this as good as it got. It was a just meant to be a test shot and it turned out to be the best of them all. All the others were really bad >.>

Thanks for the thoughtful comment, I see this is a thing of yours towards artists. I like it, it feels very personal, even for a quote, since you take the time and effort to make them fit what you are looking at.

Sorry for the delayed reply.

25 seconds, and I'm surprised the amount of star trails are that low. Cause none of my other shots since has turned out as good. I have an idea my tripod wasn't firmly locked and was sagging with the direction. But its a wild guess imo xD

Long exposure and quite a bit of luck, cause I haven't been able to replicate the nice results on newer tries.

I'll be taking more as the winter approaches and I'll try to get an adapter to my telescope. I've tried one night after the image was taken, but some strong auroras came and lit up the sky to much.

They are usually not that clear around here, but this night was special from that point we were. There was also a bear in the area so it was pretty creepy to do photographies in the pitch black environment.

Great picture!

X-a-v-i-o-r In reply to Ilinho [2010-10-15 15:38:52 +0000 UTC]

It taken with a Sony A-200 so not the best camera for these shots ^^'

The ISO was set to 200 with noise reduction off and an exposure of 30 seconds. Then ofc comes the work in photoshop to get rid of that UNHOLY amount of grain on the image.
Topaz Denoise does an awesome job at removing the grain and keeping the image intact. Though not perfectly so I've worked a bit to bring the colors back to the stars.

instantly, i felt myself moving.....
but maybe that's also a result of it being 3 o'clock in the morning... *considers*
nahhh

man... that's really awesome...
where i am... i really don't see too many stars... if i'm lucky, i'll see five
anyway...
i wouldn't know to much about it, but wouldn't a long exposure be best in these sort of situations?
i should really go to bed... it's really affecting how i spell things... i get 'im right in the end (i hope) but... X3

X-a-v-i-o-r In reply to DragonLord-Rhea [2010-10-14 09:13:53 +0000 UTC]

Well strangely not, it will leave star trails showing you the rotation of the earth. And thats bad because I need so much exposure in order to get a good image with little noise. To compensate for a really bad noise handling on higher ISO's

well, then i'm at a loss~
okay, okay, how about a really short, long exposure?
lolol~ i think i'll give up right now X3

The colors are real, but I'll admit I've boosted vibration and saturation because I had to remove all the noise in the image and it made it all bland. I tried again today, but none turned out as good as this did. A one time shot I guess. Plus there were really strong auroras tonight!

illusivereality In reply to X-a-v-i-o-r [2010-10-11 20:09:49 +0000 UTC]

Darn auroras, always getting in the way! There's probably a technique (or several hundred) to getting a good shot of stars. Although, this shot is near perfect.

X-a-v-i-o-r In reply to illusivereality [2010-10-11 20:17:53 +0000 UTC]

I also want "live view" so I can adjust the manual focus much better even if its good here.

X-a-v-i-o-r In reply to illusivereality [2010-10-11 20:16:51 +0000 UTC]

I'm limited to my DSLR house though, I can't use any higher value then 100 ISO or the image will get waaay too grainy to work with, so I'm stuck with 30 sec exposures which leaves star trails and makes them a tad bigger.

And I think maybe the tripod I used was sagging a bit from a loose screw or something, because the trails on this isn't ANYTHING compared to the others I have.

illusivereality In reply to X-a-v-i-o-r [2010-10-12 12:49:11 +0000 UTC]

Sounds like you've got a CCD sensor in your DSLR. CMOS sensors don't really get that much noise at faster "film" speeds. Perhaps there's some sort of lens that can boost the amount of light your sensor gets.

I'm thinking of a really wide cone that allows in more light and gives a sort of "sun on ant through magnifying glass" effect. Although, I don't really know much about that.

Anyhow, here's how my little Canon 400D handles night photography so you can see how its CMOS sensor handles noise... thought you might find it interesting.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

X-a-v-i-o-r In reply to illusivereality [2010-10-12 13:10:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah its a CCD sensor, but still it shouldn't be this grainy. Its a flaw to the camera I've learned to compensate for. I'd like one of the better Alfa models with an Exmor CMOS. Those are awesome.

Of course better optics would improve this, my current lens has F3.5

It would be awesome if they would make a camera especially for night photography with a sensor that is optimised for low-light conditions. There aren't enough night photos out there.
