Description
Okay, so I initially wasn't going to submit this until I knew whether I'd got him or not, but I just can't resist getting him out there and seeing what you guys think of him
Old Guys Rule!
~GENERAL INFORMATION~
Name: Matthias
Nickname/Alias: Grandpa, Storyteller
Age: Elder (26+ years)
Gender: Male
Height: 16.3hh; has seemingly 'shrunk' with age
Weight: 1190lbs; is beginning to obviously lose muscle and fat as he ages
Type: Light
Faction: Native
Family: N/A (unless anyone wants to be?)
~DETAILED INFORMATION~
Build: In his prime, Matthias was lithe and muscular, however he has now begun to lose this muscle quite rapidly, and thus he appears obviously underweight.
Distinctive traits:
Many scars that he has collected over the years as a scout, and before that as a wild horse; patches of missing mane (combination of scarring, build, and old age) and stub-tail (amputated due to infection in a wound); oddly shaped blaze; white shoulder patch (tobiano) with cat tracks; large amounts of natural greying around face, mane and joints.Voice: Deep and resonating, Matthias has the perfect storyteller's voice.
Quirks or distinct gestures: Can often be seen subconsciously wagging his tail-stump in an attempt to remove flies, even when there are no flies around.
Sexuality: No sexual interest whatsoever; previously heterosexual.
~PERSONALITY~
Traits: {GRUMPY} {STUBBORN} {SHORT-TEMPERED} {KIND-HEARTED} {FATHERLY} {PATIENT}
First Impression:
When your character first meets him, he's likely to seem gruff and apathetic, which is partially due to his growing stiffness of limbs and near-constant pain, however when he grows to know you better (or if you are a foal) he will not hesitate to take you under his wing and become like a second father to you, and be a patient listener for your problems. He also has plenty of stories to tell about his past as a scout, which has earnt him the title of 'Storyteller' among the natives. In Depth:
Matthias is actually very lonely, although he disguises it well and few know the truth, because his human passed away several years ago, and the one mate that he'd ever had sadly passed away a few seasons before that. He was absolutely heartbroken, and still is, but he disguises it very well. Since then he has not attempted to take another mate, perhaps because there are very few mares of similar age to him in his faction, and this isn't helping his loneliness. However, he enjoys the company of foals and younger horses because they remind him of the life that he used to lead, and remind him that there is indeed still hope of a fulfilled life within his herd. His storytelling gives him a reason to continue living, else he would have given up and succumbed to death long ago. He's not one to dwell in the past, though, and encourages anyone to unload their problems onto him, and offer his experience and advice into how to deal with it. This ensures that he does not become engulfed by grieving for the life and loves that he has lost, and so, as long as his faction has problems, he has vowed to not succumb to the stiffness and pain of his growing arthritis, and venture out every day, to lend a hoof or two where he can.
~HISTORY~
Pre-Group:
In his youth, Matthias was a wild stallion, with a significant harem of mares and a growing number of foals every year. He lived life as carefree as you could be; he roamed where he pleased, his harem either followed him and gained his protection, or did not and forfeited their safety. He gained some of his oldest scars in this period, from fights with other wild stallions over mares, to fights with wild beasts that threatened his ever-growing herd-group. He gained quite a fame among wild horses, and as such mares began to leave their previous harems to join his. As you would expect, their stallions were far from pleased by this behaviour, and thus Matthias was regularly challenged by stallions, however he had been gifted with wonderful agility, strength and endurance for fighting, and a head empty of any thoughts of consequences. This winning streak, however, had to end somewhere. It ended with a particularly brutal fighter, a large draft-built stallion who came to claim his two lead mares that had fled his harem to join Matthias. This stallion was a match for Matthias' strength and endurance, and they each ground each other down over days and weeks of repeat fights, until one unfortunate day. Matthias had, the previous night, impregnated both of the challenger's mares, which sent the other stallion completely crazy with hatred for Matthias. The stockier stallion decided to play to Matthias' weakness - gullibility and lack of intelligence.Matthias met with the stallion on that fateful day, expecting their match to end with a draw as it always had before. The stallion stood facing away from Matthias, stamping impatiently in the dry grass. "I do not want to fight today." He had said, and Matthias had believed him. "Tired?" He'd teased, before dipping his head in acknowledgement, "Very well-" And those had been his last words. The cunning brute had lashed out with one back leg, catching Matthias squarely in the jaw, before the brute's other hoof joined the first, catching Matthias in the centre of his left eye. Matthias had screamed and whinnied in pain, but the brute had ensured that there were no mares around to hear his cries. With a maniac's grin, he had placed his front hooves on Matthias' fallen body, and then began to slowly transfer his weight onto Matthias, until he was stood upon the fallen body of the defeated stallion. It was a wonder that he was not killed; instead, he was found many hours later, bleeding and bruised, by a kindly human who, ever so slowly, nursed him back to health and fitness. Matthias soon realised that he owed his life to this two-legged human, and that he had nothing to return to anyway. With those thoughts in his mind, he allowed himself to be backed and claimed by the human, who was a scout and hunter for a nomadic travelling group. Many years followed, years filled with the exhilaration of the chase among other horses, and the stealthy art of disguise, and many quick retreats and lucky escapes that were made in the face of danger. Matthias loved his new life, and rarely missed the life that he'd left behind, especially once he found a mate within the group. They only once tried for a foal and, when it was stillborn, they both agreed that they wouldn't need to try again. They had each other; what more could they want?It was the worst day in his life when she was killed; injured in a hunting chase and killed trying to rescue her human. Matthias was completely heartbroken, his world was shattered, all he thought that he knew about life was changed. She had only been twelve, and he fifteen, and they had their entire lives left to live, together. However, with the help of his human, he pulled through the abyss of grief, and threw himself back into his life with renewed energy, doing everything for her, and for his human. When his human died, though, of an illness brought by the colonists, he thought that he would die of grief. Although many tried, there was no one that he trusted enough to nurse him fully back to health from the utter depression in which he had found himself, and so his recover was long and painful. Eventually, he managed it, though he was never the same again, and rarely left the camp. He was twenty-two, and it had been decided that he deserved the rest of retirement, so none of the other humans ever attempted to claim him for their own, which he was glad of. Instead, he found himself drawn to the foals and youngstock of the group in order to alleviate the pain of loneliness. He began to tell them stories, when he could bear the pain that they inevitably brought, of his life as a wild horse, and as a scout and fighter, and the story of every single scar that he possessed, and more, that had faded with time. His stories gained fame within the small group, and soon it was not just foals that gathered - even the most seasoned warriors enjoyed to hear Grandpa Matthias' stories of a time gone by.
In-Group: (This comes through RP! Anything significant that happens to your character should be added here as time goes by).
~EXTRA~
Other:
His halter was initially a Colonist's bridle, however his human removed the bit and manipulated the leather a little to allow Matthias to wear it as a halter - Matthias was given it just a few weeks before his human succumbed to illness and passed away. They obtained it from an abandoned coach-wagon that they discovered while scouting, and then polished it to life. After his human's death, one of the other tribespeople had taken the beaded ornaments that his human wore, and crafted them into a replacement browband for Matthias' bridle; it slips over the leather browband like a sheath. It's very precious to him, and he rarely wears it - only on very special occasions and, every year, on the anniversary of his human's death.
