Description
All this talk about forcing children to believe in gods/God, it's a tragic thing, I agree. I feel horrible when I hear people are being forced to say what they don't believe in, just like many of you who had overzealous families that made you go to church without your consent. And I will say it's wrong to force children to engage in what they don't understand. But guys, there is nothing harmful about teaching religion to children.
"But teaching children religion slows human progress! In order to kill religion we must stop teaching it to kids!"
It does not slow so-called "progress". People who actually believe this, you have to realize that by killing off a religion, you or other people just end up creating and teaching ANOTHER one. Religion has been with us since the ANCIENT times, and no matter how much you try to be rid of it, it will always be replaced by some other dogmatic belief system, with or without gods. "But children do not need to learn from such a bloody and gorey book such as the Bible!"
I agree, many children are not ready to experience the deep contexts of the Bible, but it doesn't harm the child to give the a rated G version that they can enjoy and understand:
No blood and gore in this little beauty. Antitheists and fundemental Christians, did you really expect a kid to be able to comprehend the adult version?
"But children do not need to be brainwashed by Christian camps!"
What about atheist children camps that have been around since 1996? They do just as much preaching about how God doesn't exist, it's liable to be called "brain-washing" as well when you put them both into that sort of context. The truth is, kids want to learn and be around other kids, and camps are the perfect opportunity for that. I strongly oppose camps that act more like boot-camps in general, so I can understand the concern inside children camps very much! Parents must choose wisely and know exactly what their children are being taught about when it comes to that sort of thing, so children can avoid being put into compromising situations.
" But children are taught that being an atheist is bad! They are trapped into thinking something they may not actually believe in! "
And I don't think it's right for that to happen. Alot of that behavior does not come from the actual message of Christianity, but from the parents themselves, because of THEIR faith. If a parent is THAT intimidated by someone who lacks the faith, their own faith is liable to be weaker than they wanted, and that is a problem they need to deal with themselves instead of bringing their children into it. Having doubt is not a bad thing, it's something everyone experiences at some point, and children should/are being taught to explore their beliefs. See also fav.me/d50o69g
I could go on and on about it, but here is where I think the real issue is. Misguided parenting.

Honestly, as a young age, it's good to teach kids about this type of stuff. But it's not good to only show them the Bible, and not any other atheist beliefs. What people get mixed up on is "God is a benevolent being *insert religious beliefs here*" and "If you don't like my god and ONLY my god, you're going to be tortured forever!" If you think that #2 is the right answer, it's time to think about your life. In general, I believe that people should decide their own destinies.

My parents educated me in their religion, then encouraged me to learn other beliefs so I can decide for myself. That's how people should teach religion anyway.

i am an atheist, but i was raised by very christian parents. i don't think that it was abusive. they were sharing something they loved with me. they did it in my best interest. i have some fond memories that revolve around my religious upbringing. so in short, anyone who thinks that teaching kids about god is abusive is not thinking out what they're saying. the same logic could be used by saying that not teaching kids about god is abusive.
my opinion is that you should teach your kids what you believe in, but be open to the fact that kid may not grow up to share that belief.

Thank you for making this stamp. Extreme Atheism pisses me off to no end. As a Neopagan/Polytheist myself, I try to be tolerant of other people's beliefs. Tolerance goes both ways.
Hell, when I was a little kid, I was interested in world mythology and similar things, and I'm still interested today. Can you believe that there are some people who want to ban kids from learning about all religions, mythology and folklore? Some people are just too cynical...I swear....

The one about people calling the Bible a "gory book" real pisses me off. Yes, I do agree that it has bloodshed and war in it. But what really ticks me off is when they say "Oh, it doesn't make it any better to make it kid friendly!" Well, you know what, look at the history of secular children's stories (for example the Grimm Brother's tales). They were originally darker and mature; now Disney took some of those tales and revamped it for more appropriate audiences. But still, that doesn't change the fact that some of those Disney movies have some pretty dark turns too... Sigh. Sorry I ranted. But good job bringing up points + making the stamp.

People should learn about the different religions in school. I am from Finland and here every child learns really much about different religions at school. So for me it is very strange to see how much wrong information people from other countries have about the different religions. For example it is funny that I am an atheist and I know much more facts about the Bible than really many Christian adults from the United States knows.

I am not in school anymore - I am an adult. But all schools in Finland teach about all different religions. It is difficult to explain in English.
Of course some atheist groups think that the Finnish schools should stop teaching information about the religions. But many atheists don't think like that. It is good to know basic information about all different religions also if you are an atheist.

What is GMRC? One website told that it is study about morals and values. Here in Finland the religion lessons at school don't teach those things. We learned only history and other information about all different religions.

Religion can teach children about ethics, morals, respect for authority, and many other things that are currently being distorted by "modern views". There's nothing wrong with learning the basic beliefs of the religions of the world, and gain a respect of the things that they believe while including them into yours.

Veggietales, bitches. I didn't realize it when I was younger, but as I grew up I noticed a lot of their videos based their stories on actual stories from the Bible. They just changed some things to make it more G rated and amusing for kids(and adults) alike. And they always had lessons to go with their stories. Even if you're not religious, I think they still teach you some pretty good ways to not be a dick to people. :U

I agree and disagree on some points. I don't believe that you should FORCE someone to believe in the Bible. But I am sure as in Christ is Lord that when (or if) I have children someday they will be raised Christian until they are old enough to make a choice to leave. I'm not going to just give up on my child, but if they make the choice to leave I have to respect that... I'm not going to drop it, no matter how old they are I WILL teach them about God.

I think forcing children, especially at a young age, to believe in God is wrong but simply discussing it? I don't think that's child abuse at all. People really do need to learn the difference between force and simply having discussions about it.

Our children's camp is fun and amazing. The people who work with the kids make sure it's a non-pressure situation, and that every child feels appreciated for who they are. I was just told of this today that one boy was at the children's camp(youth camp) and a person spoke of how God's love is always there, how God is always there for them. This poor boy started sobbing hearing this talk. He was prayed over by other kids(they did it all on their own, no one told them to go pray for him) and when he was asked later on what happened, he said that he'd felt so unloved when he went there(At first). he said his home life was hard, that everyone in his life went to him for their problems, and when he went there, hearing that talk, he heard God telling him that he was always there for him, that he would never leave the boy, that he loved him. Camps can change lives. Sadly I've only been to one with my old church before when I was younger(In middle school I think) but I wish I could've gone to more.
