Description
This is the application form for Dissidia Aces' THIRD cycle! Dissidia Aces is basically a tournament based Final Fantasy fanart competition free for anyone to join, so if you're interested do go check it out! The rules and application information is all posted on the front page! #DissidiaAces
As for the application itself, please download the PSD file I've included! The font I used for the character and game title is "BIG CASLON", hopefully it will be already loaded in your photoshop or other art platforms you use! If not, you can delete the font and put some other text font there. If you have a problem with getting the PSD, then right click and save as a jpg and draw over it. Whatever works for you. Just note me or comment here if you have a problem. n_n
Artistic requirements are: finished full-color waist-up and portrait images of your three top character choices. Make sure that the portrait is not just copy-pasted from your half-body drawing; you need to draw a completely new portrait of each character. Make sure your art is 100% your own, so no tracing or copying directly from references!
Application period is between: July 24th - September 30th ! So go on ahead and submit away!
We're still in the throws of finishing up CYCLE 02, but giving you all a headstart for the next cycle would be pretty beneficial!

You CANNOT apply for the BOSS characters, DARK KAIN AND CECIL! Please make sure to read the FAQ and the RULES posted on the front page, and journal of the group. If you have any questions, feel free to note me.

DISSIDIA ACES
★ WHAT IS IT?
It's an art tournament! The only goal is to improve in your artwork and have fun drawing Final Fantasy stuff! Sorry, there are no prizes for winning this tournament.
★ HOW DOES THIS WORK?
Anyone is allowed to join. Each artist will apply to "fight" (read: draw) as a number of Final Fantasy characters; those that pass the application stage will be entered into the main tournament. In the main tournament, competitors are matched up randomly and each round will eliminate half the competitors until only one remains. Each round consists of an assigned task that the competing artists will need to complete. Submissions will be judged based on creativity, skill, and awesome factor - the winner will continue onto the next round.
Those who do not pass a round in the main tournament will be dropped into a sub-tournament. The sub-tournament works the same way as the main tournament and get the same assignments, except competitors are in a different block. It's been set up primarily so people who didn't pass but would like to still participate are allowed to.
★ WHAT IS THIS ABOUT CHARACTERS?
As this is a Final Fantasy themed competition, only Final Fantasy characters are allowed. You can apply to be any Final Fantasy character as long as they're main/playable characters or major villains. These characters can be from pretty much any Final Fantasy game that at least sort of links into the various Final Fantasy universes as long as it is not an MMORPG. That means that Final Fantasy Tactics is fair game, as is the Square-Enix designed side of Kingdom Hearts, but Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV are not. The only exception to the MMORPG rule is that Shantotto and Prishe from FFXI are allowed given that they're already included in the official Dissidia games.
COROLLARY
The character you choose does not have to be a melee fighter. The White Mage from Final Fantasy I is allowed, as are characters like Garnet (Final Fantasy IX) and Namine (Kingdom Hearts). However, given that characters like these do not specialize in offense, it'll be up to you as the artist to determine how they will fight their battles.
★ You can not apply as the BOSS character, which in this Cycle (03) is -yet to be determined-
★ KINGDOM HEARTS characters are okay as long as they are Square-Enix contributions. That means Sora, Kairi, Riku, any of the Organization members are okay. Donald, Goofy, or King Mickey are not.
★ Shantotto and Prishe from FINAL FANTASY XI are allowed in this tournament. Nobody else from the Final Fantasy MMORPGs (including Final Fantasy XIV) are allowed.
★ As long as the character is either considered a main character (ie., Locke from Final Fantasy VI) or a villain (ie., Seymour from Final Fantasy X), they are allowed in the tournament.
★ Except for the Fighter, Black Mage, White Mage, Red Mage, and Thief specific to Final Fantasy I, you can not enter as a job class. Your character must be an officially named character of some level of importance. If the game your character is from incorporates job classes for outfit and capability changes (III, VI, etc.), then you must decide which class they will be entered as and stick to it throughout the tournament.
IN ADDITION:
Named character does NOT mean randomly generated names. The character has to be an official one that makes a difference in the story. That means that you can choose Delita or Ramza, but you can not choose your Dark Knight that you named Yuri. Is this clear? If you need more clarification, please ask.
As per this comment thread, characters from Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles are allowed. Even though they don't have an official name, the main characters you can choose to play as in FFCC are okay to submit as entrants. Make sure you include their race, "classic name", and the name you're giving them.
★ If you have any characters that you're not sure fall into the "okay" criteria, feel free to leave a comment asking.
Only one of each character can be entered into the main tournament - that means that only one of you are going to be able to enter as Cloud (Final Fantasy VII) or Squall (Final Fantasy VIII). There is no doubling up of characters. In order to determine who gets what character and is entered into the main tournament, you will be allowed to apply for any three Final Fantasy characters that fit the above mentioned criteria. As you only get three chances to get into the main tournament, we would like to highly discourage you only applying for the popular characters (ie., Cloud, Sephiroth) as it will lower your chance of getting into the main tournament. (You won't be the only one applying for them, and if you and 135097235 other people apply for Cloud, Squall, and Sephiroth as your three characters, then only three of you are going to get in. Does this make any sense?)
During the first cycle we were able to organize it enough that everyone was able to enter the main tournament. That was awesome. We'd love to do it again, so please, please give us a wide variety of characters to choose from!

I'm kinda confused how prelim applications go. Are we allowed to choose the same characters other people already picked?
Or is that what the prelims is? And I understand regardless of what canon outfit, its the character that matters. So does this mean in battle we can draw whatever outfit we want? XwX

For Cycle 03 Prelim applications, yes, you're allowed to apply for characters that other people have already applied for. For example, if you were to pick 1) Zidane 2) Tidus 3) Bartz in your application, and then someone else applies for 1) Zidane 2) Lightning 3) Fang
The person who draws Zidane the best, will end up with Zidane. The person who doesn't get Zidane, will then get their second character choice, which in this case is Tidus.

And in the application, you can draw any outfit on your character AS LONG AS THE OUTFIT IS OFFICIAL. Lol. For example, if you have Cloud in your application, you can draw AC, CC or FF7 outfit. Because those are all official.

-Agrais from FF tactics is choosable right?
-Although I think I won't have to, when it come down to it, is it okay to use the Mandragora summon from Dissidia?

Yeah Agrais is allowed.
And yeah you can use any Dissidia summon you want as an attack

simple, by using an art program such as photoshop, preview, sai, sketchbook pro. whatever floats your boat. if you're in something as simple as paint, it is still possible - by using the select tool, copy, and paste, and position. if you need further help, feel free to note me. n_n

I want to join...but I was ticked off last time when after I got beaten (which was fine, the other person's entry was amazing), the person who beat me didn't bother continuing or entering the next round where I would have loved to. I wish it hadn't put me off a bit .... :/

what, really? that's messed up! what a wonderful point you've just brought up. how bout i propose something new? say, we'll make it /mandatory/ for people to note me if they will participate or not, regardless if they win or lose the last round. if they dont want to participate, then i'll let the other person through.
I've decided it just now, that is what I will do, and it will be announced later after the Cycle 03 preliminary round is closed.

I think it's a good idea - I'm sure I'm not the only one this happened to. And maybe if the deadline comes and the one who went through didn't submit anything, anyone who lost but who wants to keep drawing - rather than perhaps join the sub tournament - prepares a piece just in case? I kinda wish I had, since I'd have loved to keep competing.
I may enter again, though possibly with different character choices - Jecht was fun to draw but I might try someone different....

This is exciting!!
I've been following part of the past cycle and have loved the artwork I've seen from the group gallery. I'll try applying, since it's summer and I have time to draw now, though who knows once school starts :'D, but then again, considering the awesome artwork I've seen, with any luck I won't last too long anyways XD.
A side question: Have you heard of Monty Om's "Dead Fantasy" series? If you have, are we allowed to use the outfits/abilities that the characters display in that series?

Yeah, I've heard of Dead Fantasy, and Namine with the arcane swords is AWESOME. But unfortunately, we only let in the official outfits/abilities. It's written in our FAQ, I believe. Thanks for asking though! n_n

Ah, yeah I remember reading about the official outfit thing in the FAQ (hence, there's yet to be an entry of Cloud in a dress...) But I did see monty's Namine in one of the entries (vs. Genesis I think?), so I just wanted to make sure. Thanks for clearing that up!
