"My Neighbor Totoro" was probably the first Anime movie I ever remember watching.For those of you who have seen this movie, it may come as no surprise that this movie was inspired by Lewis Carrol's "Alice in Wonderland" (also a movie I enjoyed as a kid).
Its most obviously seen in traits of the Catbus. Both the Catbus and the Cheshire Cat wear huge smiles and can appear and disappear at will (as you see the Cheshire Cat doing here).
As for where Carrol got his inspiration for the Cheshire Cat, it is still being debated, although some say it was a gargoyle on a church in his home town of Cheshire.

There was a brand of Cheshire cheese that molded their cheese into smiling cat faces, before Carroll wrote his books.
