Description
I've finally finished this commission for . Somewhere in Late Jurassic China, two metriacanthosaurids Yangchuanosaurus shangyouensis did not divide the territory.Yangchuanosaurus was described by Dong and colleagues in 1978 on the basis of a amazingly preserved skeleton from the Shangshaximiao Formation (Sichuan). In 1983, a second, larger specimen (CV 00216) was described, which was isolated into the species Y. magnus. Years later it became known that this species represents the age stage of the type one. The second valid species, Y. zigongensis, previously belonged to the genus Szechuanosaurus. Yangchuanosaurus is related to the fairly complete Chinese taxon Sinraptor, as well as the fragmentary Metriacanthosaurus parkeri from England.
The type specimen of Yangchuanosaurus reached about 8 meters in length. The second specimen was much larger, with a skull more than a meter in length. The example of these two individuals shows how the proportions of the animal changed with age: with growing up, the head greatly increased. As befits an allosauroid, Yangchuanosaurus had pronounced cranial decorations. Unlike Allosaurus itself, in addition to the lacrimal horns, the Chinese taxon had a pair of crests in front of them. Large upper teeth made it possible to cope with large prey (young sauropods and stegosaurs).
These Yangchuanosaurs are based on a skeletal reconstruction by Dan Folkes depicting "Y. magnus" (pbs.twimg.com/media/E5UwBxxXEA… ). The client asked to make poses similar to the tigers from this photo: i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/1… . I tried to embody them in the drawing without distorting the anatomy. The color was also made at the request of the client, mainly Komodo dragon was taken as a basis. The flora is common for the Late Jurassic, with ferns, cycads, ginkgo and conifers.
