Description
New work and experiment. Several times I met examples of pencil drawings on a black background and decided to try my own. This is a portrait of Tyrannosaurus rex. The depicted individual was not based directly on any known specimen, although the shape of the nose resembles Stan, my favorite T. rex.
In this portrait I have focused my current wiews on the facial integument of a Tyrannosaurus rex. The figure shows rough, keratinized skin and exposed teeth. However, my version is different from Carr et al, 2017. In addition to the cracked keratin of "crocodilian" type with mechanoreceptors along a maxillary teeth row, there are maxillary structures that have left depressions in this bone in some tyrannosaurids (more details can be found in this video WitmerLab: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTsVzx⦠, as well as in the corresponding article on the blog of Mark Witton). Top of the muzzle shows a keratinized skin, particularly on nose. The lower jaw Integument, however, is slightly different. The covers around the eyes is more "traditional". For those who this view seems inconsistent with reality: this is just my opinion, I could be wrong.
As for the other parts, I can mention the pronounced jaw muscles responsible for the bone-crushing bite. The neck is covered with wrinkled skin with a very small "reticulae", which does not deserve the drawing.
Technical HB pencil, black watercolor and black marker, 2019.

This is so awesomebro, but in a good way! I really like the amount of effort you put in your textures lately. Makes the animals look so lifelike.

Woohoo! Skull Rex!
Who knew Dinosaur Revolution got that speculation down and we got to see it in action.

Although there may be some similarities (because of liplessness, obviously), my T. rex does not have the same pattern of colouring.Β Β

Course it doesn't, I'm just saying these recent developments were speculative back then and they were quite realistic.

I may disagree with your views on facial integument, but that by no means distracts me from just how top notch your art is. This is no exception. There's just something so eye catching about your art style.

No problem. On second thought, sorry about the first bit. Looking back, it just feels sorta condescending.

I am inspired by modern sauropsids with finely-scaly or naked skin. In this case I was inspired by naked chickens, but in many other cases the inspiration came from the large lizards (monitors and iguanas).

Thank you! I really appreciate what you said. Β Portraying dinosaurs as real animals is what I'm trying to achieve. As for lips in T. rex (not "T-rex"Β Β ), my opinion is painted in the description of the drawing. However, it is obvious that this is a controversial issue.

I am so sorry! I know how to write genus and species names. Please don't get the wrong Idea of me. I read scientific literature I promise. Also, doesn't Mark Witton say they did have lips? So that their teeth wouldn't dry out?
