Since you said "lol", I'm not sure if you were really asking. I'll answer anyway, though. (LOL)
Open source is a programming term. It means that, not only is the software free, but the code to generate the program is also freely available. These sorts of programs are usually maintained by more than one volunteer around the world. Some large programs have lots of programmers working on it. I think GIMP probably has a large community of software developers.
Anyway, it is an interesting phenomenon, and there is some really good stuff out there like that.
