Working at the Superstar Daycare CH 10 Chapter 10: Saying Sorry “I am so so SO sorry, Miss Nae-nae!” Sun blurted out when the lights turned on again. He frantically circled me. His rays hid away in distress. “Are you okay? He didn't mean it! I promise!” My hands raised in surrender as I attempted to follow him with my eyes. The poor robot acted truly panicked. While Miss Cassandra wrangled up the kids, Sun insisted I stay behind. Miss Cassandra was hesitant to leave me alone with him. But my senior knew better than to argue with the robot's demands. Now I was alone with this flustered piece of machinery. “I'll talk to him! Don't worry. He won't be going in there again!” The robot continued, X's flashing in his eyes. The colors on his plastic and fabric were still in transition. The stars were peeking through one last time before the stripes took over. “So sorry, so sorry!” Sun repeated. “I-I'm okay,” My hands waved in front of Sun as he passed around me, “Nothing bad happened.” “He scared you!” Sun stopped at my face, exclamation points in his eyes, “Your heart rate was so high I thought you would EXPLODE!” “Y-you- What?” my face felt cold. I was with this animatronic the whole time. When did they have time to talk about that? “I saw it, Miss Nae-nae,” Sun's hands attempted to calm his trembling. His eyes went blank, “I was so worried!” His voice was frantic, almost shaky. That in combination with his smiling face made this exchange unnerving. “I-- I uh-” I blanked. How do I respond to this? “You're not leaving, are you? Please, PLEASE say you won't!” Large metallic hands reached out to me in desperation, “We'll get in trouble if another person quits because of us!” I stepped away instinctively. I looked back at my coworker. The children were in the midst of either packing up to go home or getting their snacks ready. Miss Cassandra had her attention split between them and me. A hand was at her mouth and her feet paced from side to side. She was clearly worried. I attempted to wave at her. Show her I was okay. The sound of sobbing interrupted that notion. I turned around again to find Sun on the floor. Hands over his face. Metallic arms moved up and down to mimic crying. “No, no, no,” he mumbled between crying noises, “Why didn't you listen to me? She's leaving, she's leaving!” Oh no... Uh-- what do I do?, I gently patted the robot's head. My fingers weaved between the sun's rays that were barely peeking through. Maybe calming him like I would a child could work? It was the only thing I knew how to do. Sun's face creaked up to look at mine. Rain clouds displayed in his eyes. The rays timidly raised, bringing my hand up with them. “I'm not quitting,” I knelt down to his level on the floor, “Mr. Moon did scare me. But not enough for me to quit.” I kept my voice low and my face calm, “He said sorry and we were able to talk it out.” Sun's face turned down, eyes blank again, “I know you did...” Ah right, so Sun saw all of it, then. It was still strange to me. To have two robots in one. Saved money, I suppose. Even though the transition happened right in front of me I still didn't know how they did it. Do they both know what happens at all times? I wish I could just take a back seat while someone more competent took over my body sometimes. “Can,” I took my hand off the animatronic's head and leaned further to look at Sun's face, “can Mr. Moon hear me right now?” “Yes.” Sun's response was short and blunt. His arms wrapped around himself and he looked away. “Okay then... I just want to tell him that,” I smiled, “he's welcome to visit me during nap. Whenever he wants. I liked the company.” I really didn't want to be alone for naps anymore. My last job made me do it enough. It was so... frustrating? I guess that would be the right word. So many situations happened that I couldn't handle properly because I was alone. Kids get sick, have a potty accident, injure themselves, leave a toy in another room. The list goes on. Sun shot up, “You mean it!?” I fell over trying to doge his excited movements, “You really REALLY mean it?” The rays extended fully and spun around. Stars sparkled in his eyes. I hefted myself up, “Y-yeah,” I fixed my clothes, a little embarrassed, “I plan on staying here as long as I can.” Besides, seeing Sun act like that... It was effective. Feeling empathy for a robot wasn't something I thought I would experience. But here I am. “I'm so HAPPY! Can I hug you? Please! Please!” Mr. Sun's long arms opened wide before me. To be honest I wasn't in the mood. I felt the obligation to, though. It would make our conversation less meaningful if I refused. So I raised an arm to my robotic coworker. That was all he needed. I was immediately enveloped by Sun's wingspan. Each arm was long enough to wrap all the way around me and then some. I actually felt... small. That was a new feeling. My mind would always default to thinking about how large I was. A laugh escaped my mouth and I smiled. Sun's embrace was so gentle. I barely felt any pressure from him at all. It was more about the gesture than the feeling, I assumed. That was comforting to know. If all of the animatronics gave out hugs like this then I could stop worrying about someone getting hurt. I gave Mr. Sun's back a couple of pats and stepped away. Sun's rays were spinning and swaying from side to side joyfully. His eyes were smiling. Heh... So quick to despair and just as quick to joy. What a goof. “Welp,” I shifted my bag over my shoulder, “I've gotta put my stuff away.” “Yes! And it's time for goodbyes!” Sun jumped back into action. Prancing whimsically over to the children waiting by the door. I couldn't keep pace with him. My legs were not nearly as long as his. That and I couldn't walk like gravity didn't exist like he did. Sun had gotten through a few hug requests before I caught up. “Is everything alright, Nae?” Miss Cassandra rushed up to me, her voice hushed. “Yeah, it's okay,” I put my bag away leaving my snack in hand, “Mr. Sun was just worried about me.” “Why...?” Cassandra used her 'explain yourself' tone. I knew I couldn't get away with just brushing it off now. “Well, uh-” I swallowed, “I met Mr. Moon.” “What did it do?” I could see concern behind the glare of Cassandra's glasses. “He –um--” Do I tell her about the little glitch? I had long since gotten over it... “He gave me... one of those candies... Moondrops? Right?” No need to make her worry, I decided. I closed my cabinet door and stood up. I had to look down to see more than just my coworker's hairline. After being with Mr. Moon all nap and then talking with Mr. Sun, I had forgotten how tall I was. Why was I cursed with such a fate? I was big enough already without my height. Stop thinking about it! Stop it! “Right...” Miss Cassandra's side eye made my gaze run in another direction. A mother's intuition is powerful, “You didn't eat it, did you?” “N-no...” I pulled the little candy out of my apron, “Mr. Moon said that they make you sleepy. So I didn't. Mr. Sun was uh-- worried that I ate it...” I was a terrible liar. It didn't help that I couldn't look people in the eye normally let alone when I wasn't being truthful. I bet my face just screamed 'I'm hiding something!' Cassandra shook her head with a small smirk. She sighed and focused her eyes on mine, “You're okay?” “Yeah, I'm fine,” I struggled to look back into her eyes. “Mom! Mom!” A little one tugged on Cassandra's skirt. It was the girl I saw arrive with her on Friday. “I'm your teacher at work, dear,” She quietly prompted. “Miss Teacher... David's being mean!” Cassandra's daughter pointed behind her dramatically. “And what is he doing?” Cassandra continued her conversation while I slipped away. Whew... Hopefully, we can just drop that conversation there... The children had gotten restless while waiting on us adults (and robot) to finish talking. Sun had begun singing a goodbye song with them to keep them entertained. It was one I knew the motions for so I joined in the line. While moving my arms like alligator jaws, Sun noticed me in the small gaggle of children. He stopped following the motions of the song to wave me over. I was comfortable where I was. Plus I didn't want to run the risk of being smacked by a flying metal arm. I shook my head apologetically. However, Sun was not deterred. His voice box continued the song as he approached me. Mr. Sun placed a hand behind me and shepherded me to the front of the group. I froze. The music was ringing in my ears. The children were happily following Mr. Sun's movements beside me. With each swing of his arm, I felt a breeze on my face. His movements were different than the ones I knew for this song. Was that why he insisted on this? Well, okay... It wouldn't be the silliest thing I've ever done. So for the last verse of the song Sun and I did different moves. The children thought it was hilarious. “Mr. Sun! That's wrong!” “Like this!” Some of the children said. The bright animatronic only exaggerated the wrong moves. At one point acting like he was swimming in the air. The little ones in turn followed my moves more fervently. They tried their very best to show Mr. Sun what to do. I almost balled over in laughter at the sight. It was a struggle to continue the motions. I was just lucky that I didn't have to sing. Once the song concluded I wasn't done laughing yet. The kids joined me. Cassandra's children even stopped squabbling to look at what was going on. They even joined in. This ended up being so infectious that nearly everyone was laughing. Even the robot. I had to force myself to hold my breath to stop. After a couple more chuckles I managed to say, “What do we say -- heh heh-- to Mr. Sun for the song?” “THANK YOOOOOU~~!!” little voices cheered. “You are WELCOME, Superstars!” Sun bowed. His performance was a success. “Now, have a good snack and get home safely~ I'll miss you!” The children waved goodbye as Miss Cassandra pushed the door button. I also waved at Sun He responded by putting his whole body into it. He looked like a piece of seaweed swaying in the ocean. I smiled, my face still hurt from laughing so much. So I curled the corners of my mouth down to compensate. I followed the group up the stairs and to the tables. There were already some parents waiting to scoop up their little ones. They said their 'thank you's and 'goodbye's before walking off. I heard some of them asking their child about how Monty Golf went or about their newly made hats. “Alright, children,” Cassandra announced, “Find a seat. We'll have snack now.” I managed to sit down in one of the small chairs. There were fewer children now. 12 if I was counting correctly. We began to eat and the children chatted amongst themselves. My snack was almost to my mouth when a hand tapped my shoulder. “Are you comfortable?” the motherly voice lulled me into a sense of security. I turned to find Miss Cassandra standing next to me. The lights glared off of her glasses so I couldn't read her eyes. That was fine with me. “Yeah, I'm used to it,” I replied. The chairs were small, but with no arms, so I could still sit on them. Although, I had to turn my body 90 degrees to fit my legs by the table. Now that I was thinking about it. Sitting on the floor would have been more convenient. I could fit my legs under the table and I wouldn't have to worry about breaking the chair. But, I didn't want the children to copy me if I did. So on the chair I stayed. Cassandra hummed her response and shrugged, “You should go on your break now.” “Oh?” I had honestly forgotten about that. I got here so late in the day I didn't think about it. “You'll need to be back for second nap,” She continued, “No worries, Nico will be here soon to help. I can handle things here.” Mr. Jones hadn't exactly told me my hours this morning. He went over my basic duties and when to arrive. Nothing else. Why didn't I ask about that? Ah, man... How dumb of me... I was lucky my coworker was nice enough to think about that. Not all of them do. “Okay, I'll go get my stuff, then,” My legs creaked my body off of the tiny chair. I waved at the remaining children, “Have a good snack, friends. I'll be back later.” “Bye-bye!” “Bye, Teacher!” “Hug! Hug!” After paying my dues in hugs I was off down the stairs again. I had to think about what to do on my break. And maybe find out how long it was supposed to be. Yeah, that would be good to know...
