Description
As you can see, in this chapter Miss Nae-nae finally meets Mr. Moon. Can't believe it took me this long to get to this point. But hey, story bits always went longer than I thought they would in Spirit, too. So I suppose that is just how I do. haha
You can read the written portion here:
Working at the Superstar Daycare CH 9Chapter 9: Hello Moon The little one next to me looked up. Eyes wide with the effort to stay awake. He was tired. I could tell. But he wasn't comfortable yet. Something was bothering him. Perhaps wanting his Mom. Maybe something was scaring him. It could have been the fact I was a stranger. No matter the reason I was there to help him rest. I remembered seeing Sun use sign language with him last week. I didn't know much, but I knew some basics. Like the sign for 'sleep'. I put my open palm over my eyes. My figures pinched together as I moved my hand down to my chin to show my eyes closed. Mikey's face relaxed a bit and he smiled. It seemed he understood me. He closed his eyes. Not quite asleep yet. I could tell by his breathing. I gently placed my hand on his head. My thumb rested by his temple. I breathed slowly. In and out. With each breath, I moved my thumb back and forth smoothing out his hair. The boy soon mimicked my pace until he was fully asleep. That was easy enough. I have dealt with worse. My heart sighed in relief. This whole nap situation hadn't been so bad. I knew I was just overthinking it. Now that everyone was asleep, I had some time to figure out those loose ends. Like where the laundry went and how to connect to the speakers. I left my bag next to Mikey and slowly padded around the room. My first thought was to check near the bedding storage. My eyes had adjusted to the light by now. They scanned the walls surrounding the ramp for a shoot or basket somewhere. I knelt down to inspect a spot under the shelves. Was that a handle there or just a trick of the light? Jingle Jingle Did a kid just rustle in their sleep? It's fine... I traced my hand over the wall. There was an indent there. Ah, so it's a shoot, looks like. JINGLE JINGLE That's louder. Did someone get up-, “Woah-” I turned to find a grinning face inches from my own. The eyes were dark save for two glowing red lights. “Hello, there,” I said automatically. That's what I would usually say when playing a horror game. Get friendly with the thing hunting me. Make it casual. Although, this wasn't a game. This was here and now. My heart skipped a beat. The figure tilted its head and raised its finger over its smile. The bells on its wrists and nightcap softly played their tune. Was I being too loud? I might have been. I moved my hand to sign 'sorry'. After adjusting to the light from its eyes I was able to get a better look at who was in front of me. It was an animatronic. Pretty much exactly like Sun save for a few differences. The fabric had a different pattern on it. Stars instead of stripes. They had a soft glow to them. The sun's rays were replaced with a nightcap adorned with the same stars. The most striking difference was the face. Half of it had darkened leaving only the shape of a crescent moon behind. This had to be Mr. Moon. I could tell why people said he was scary. Those eyes alone would do it. Nothing I couldn't handle, though. I had imagined far worse things to find behind me. He wasn't acting hostile. Quite the opposite. After processing my response he moved away. He slid his body along the padded floor like he was swimming on a cloud. A jingle or two prevented him from being completely silent. He sat himself down in the middle of the room and looked around. “You,” I began in a whisper, “you're Mr-” His head jerked to face me. His eyes were completely black. His finger firmly at his mouth. I covered my own with both hands. Okay... no noise, got it. Very strict, wasn't he? The robot's posture relaxed once I complied. The red light returned to his eyes. This time, however, it showed a string of letters. They scrolled across his face until I had gotten the full message. ALL ASLEEP. GOOD JOB. A compliment? Well, that was nice. I didn't really do that much. But I placed the tip of one hand on my chin and moved my palm down in front of me to sign, 'thank you'. Another set of letters appeared. YOU ARE WELCOME, MISS NAE-NAE. I froze. I wasn't ready for it to show my name. Mr. Sun must have told him that. The sleepy-themed robot simply stared at me. His head clicked from side to side. The void-like eyes ready to display the next message. I still had plenty of things I was curious about. This animatronic had been so elusive till now. But I ran out of things I could say with my hands. I had to figure out a way to talk without talking. Huh... My eyebrows shot up. Oh yeah! I put up one finger to the robot. He shifted to accommodate me walking past. I rustled in my bag till I had gotten my sketchbook and pencil out. I flipped the pages till I got to the very end. I wasn't a huge fan of interrupting my sketches with random notes. But it was the best I had. So doing this at the end was the best option. I wrote as neatly as I could and then presented it to the robot. You're Mr. Moon? Red lights blinked in the eyes for a few seconds. Then new text appeared. YES. I AM MOON. Before I could write down my next question another message started. SUN DOES NOT WANT ME HERE. I responded quickly. Why? YOU GET NERVOUS EASILY. Well... That wasn't wrong. Especially if it was Sun's experience he was told about. I had acted like a jumpy mess around Sun. I felt my shoulders fall in exasperation. My face made an embarrassed smile. I had to get better at controlling myself. I DO NOT SEE IT. YOU ARE CALM IN THE DARK. “What?” my voice surprised me. Moon jerked forward. His finger yet again at his mouth. More forcefully this time. The speed of it made me scuttle away from him. I frantically signed 'sorry' over and over. After a twitch of his neck, Moon slunk back to his previous position. Alright... Add jerky movements to the list of things that make Moon scary. Got it. Man, he really is a stickler for the 'be quiet' rule... My breathing had gotten faster and my hands felt cold. I had to hold back a nervous laugh. That had actually frightened me. Though I had to admit, it was a nice dose of adrenaline. Moon's attention had peeked as he observed me. After a moment I heard clicking and snapping coming from his joints. The lights flashed sporadically in Moon's eyes, brighter this time. It reminded me of an alarm light. Which was a bit concerning. Well, more than a bit. The bells at his hands and feet played when he moved forward. Each movement was jerky and forced. A new message was displayed as he approached. PLEASE, REMAIN CALM. The robot got closer and closer. Every unhinged movement only served to remind me of how big this machine was. The floor vibrated with each jingle of the bells. If any part of that metal body touched me, it would break something. I was sure of it. I continued to scoot away until the wall stopped me. I wasn't sure what Mr. Moon was trying to do. The message was friendly, but his movements were threatening. Was this the glitch people talked about? All I heard was my pounding heart reverberating through my head. Now my feet also felt cold. I had quickly gone from playfully scared to truly terrified. Why wasn't I screaming? Any normal person would be calling out for help right now... Oh gosh, what about the kids? Would they be okay? I had to do something... But what could I even do? I wasn't strong enough to stop this metallic beast. My arms covered my face. My eyes squeezed shut and braced for the worse. A soft whirring sound pierced through me. I timidly glanced back at the animatronic. He was close. But not too close. His hand was held out. The noise concluded with a click. A blue candy was now in the robot's hand. The sight of it surprised me. So much so that I snapped out of my panic. I nearly laughed. Yet another string of letters caught my attention. BREATH. IN. OUT. The letters would get brighter then slowly fade away. This repeated again and again. What was he doing? These words were clearly meant to calm me down. But the way he did it seemed... off. He wasn't attempting to touch me, though. Robots aren't supposed to hurt people, I told myself. A big sigh escaped my mouth. Calm down... Everything is okay. Nothing's going to happen. Everything is okay... Nothing's going to happen... Moon did not change his stance until I started to breathe with his prompts. Once the robot registered that I did, he dropped the candy in my lap and slithered away. His movements were fluid again and his posture was relaxed. That was strange. I could understand why people were afraid now. I had no idea what set him off. My heart was still racing. I couldn't think straight. I AM SORRY. I DID NOT MEAN TO SCARE YOU. Another message. How do I respond to that? I didn't know enough to understand what was going on. The situation ended just as quickly as it started. Moon was now the one moving away from me. His face still showed a smile, but he somehow looked sad. I felt my eyebrows furrow. Was I feeling bad for him now? Talk about emotional whiplash. My heaving chest continued its attempt to calm down. I forced it into deeper and slower breaths. Moon was completely sill. His face pointed firmly at the ground. The red glow only illuminated his pointed shoes. It stayed like that for a while. I couldn't tell how long. But something had to happen. What if one of the kids woke up to that? I mustered up the courage to move. I scrambled for my sketchbook and attempted to write something. My hands were still shaky, but I managed. What was that? Moon did not move. I breathed one more shaky breath. Did I break him? Oh no... I had to do something. Despite my nerves, I tapped on my book. Thankfully, the animatronic took notice and scanned my message. Slowly, timidly, he responded. MY CALM DOWN ROUTINE. I had gathered that much, but why do it in that way? If Moon had done that with anyone else or, heaven forbid, a kid, they would be in tears. The words were correct but everything else just screamed danger. My fear was gone at this point. Just had to deal with an adrenaline rush now. But I wanted Moon to elaborate. I wrote again. Has it always been like that? Scary. NO. Why did you do it? YOU WERE BEGINNING TO PANIC. I wasn't. Not until Moon pulled that 'calm down' stunt anyway. The look I gave was more irritated than I would have liked. The jester remained motionless. Kept his distance. Was he aware of what he just did? Could a robot be capable of that? His eyes scrolled out his explanation. YOUR BREATHING WAS HEAVY AND YOUR FACE WAS PALE. Well... he had a point there... Hmm... So he responded to my emotional state. Like Sun did the day of my interview. It must have been automatic. But it lacked nuance. He couldn't tell the difference between 'that spooked me' and 'I'm fearing for my life'. My head lowered with a tired shake. Moon's intentions were in the right place at least. I wrote yet again. Thank you. For trying to help. HUMAN SAFETY IS MY TOP PRIORITY. That made sense for a robot made for childcare. There was definitely something wrong, though. Whoever described that glitch as merely being 'on the fritz' should get their priorities straight. I was this close to being injured. Or at least it REALLY felt like it. I could continue asking questions about it. But I didn't know enough about animatronics to understand the answers. I decided to change the subject to lighten my mood. What is this? I held up the candy alongside the sketchbook. MOONDROP CANDY. TO HELP YOU REST. It makes you sleepy? YES. SUN GAVE THEM TO THE CHILDREN TODAY. TO HELP YOU. That explains why nap was so easy today. I'll have to thank Mr. Sun later. I slumped down against the wall. I scanned the room. All the kids were still asleep. Good... I closed my eyes and forced my muscles to relax. My robotic companion remained silent. Waited for my response. I wasn't ready to give one yet. I just wanted to think about nothing for a moment. … … Can I ask you something? YES, I AM HERE TO HELP. How do I connect my music?
