I know all about it. My birthday is December 5, which is the date when it is tradition to give presents in The Netherlands (Saint Nicolaus, Sinterklaas, which is the original version of Santa Claus).......

The day of Saint Nicolaus (Sankt Nikolaus Tag in German) is the 6th Dec.
In Germany, each child has to polish his boots on evening of 5th December. Saint Nicolaus will come by night and put some little presents in the boots.

You are right. December 5th is Saint Nicolaus Eve and that is when presents are given. In The Netherlands the helpers of the Saint come and knock on the door and children will find a sack of presents in front of the door. In our country they can put their shoes or boots under the chimney in the week(s) before Sinterklaas.
Actually the coming of Sinterklaas in the country is a big happening for children with an official entrance and live on television.
Even though my birthday was often slightly less important for my friends, I still like the feast of Sinterklaas a lot!
