Description This walnut Derpy Hooves for was my second attempt at a full sized mane, and, I've got to say, it came out better than I anticipated. I definitely changed up my mane making technique since Luna: Dark of Night, and I think it shows in the way the mane rests against her head and neck. I also don't really count Luna's tail as a real tail, since it, more or less, was a flat, cloudy shaped slab, so this was my first tail needing any degree of shaping and detailing. And that was amazing fun. Shaped tails are going to become a favorite of mine.

Her pose was loosely based on Derpy:100 which was in turn based on Faust's Derpy Hooves sketch from some time ago, but this figure lacks most of the lordosis that Derpy:100 displayed, and subsequently has a general upward and forward movement rather than a down and around look. Partially this was just to to freehanding the design and ending up with a different look, and partly this was to minimize the stand, which was pretty large in the previous iteration.

All in all I had a lot of fun with this piece, and she definitely has me enthusiastic about future fixed-mane ponies. I would like to change the general structure of her face, however, and a little more curve to her spine would have looked better. Still, it's on average a success in my book.

Want to see more of this Derpy, or the woodworking process? She has a quite expansive work in progress gallery where you can watch her come together and an expanded gallery where you can find multiple angle and detail pictures of her over at My Little Woodcraft.

Derpy Hooves and My Little Pony belong to Hasbro.

Hey, you've been busy. I was without power for more than a week, so it's kinda neat to see all the work you've been doing. I wanted to say I really like the movement and style in this piece; everything seems to flow well together. You can almost have a quality that is different than just using thread (maybe a bit fancier, too). ^^

You!
Hey; how are you? I've been praying for you this week; was Sandy pretty rough on your town, then?

Not as bad as some other places in NJ, but people still got flooded homes and some property damage. We just had a couple of fallen trees and got our house and church a bit beat up. And no power for 11 days. >.< But my family was safe and dry, so that was the most important thing. Thanks for asking!

Oh good! Hopefully not too beat up? Big trees?
And that is the most important thing.

Nope, not too beat up. Though the trees were rather tall (pine trees have really shallow roots, apparently). ^^

I sent a text to my boyfriend that said "This guy carves ponies out of fu(king wood." And that's how I knew I needed to favorite this. Your skill is amazing. I do wonder how much detail you can get though.

Am I witnessing perfection here?
I think I am...
Mistakes are gettin way harder to spot after every woodwork you make Xofox.
You're trying to make me feel useless?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xofox In reply to arkindal [2012-11-06 05:55:21 +0000 UTC]

Bushwa!
Kind of you to say though, thank you. honestly, i could have changed up a lot of things here, starting with the orientation of the design on the grain of the wood, the shape of the top layer of hair and the face shape. But I have more fixed mane ponies coming up to practice on!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

arkindal In reply to xofox [2012-11-06 11:51:42 +0000 UTC]

Well but when I said it's gettin harder to spot flaws I was honest, and even when I said I couldn't find one here!

Unrelated question, hope you don't mind, I wanted to make a Harry Potter style wand for my sister and I was wondering if I'm putting myself into something I can't handle, so the question is: Are wands somethng even a total noob can try? If so, which toold should I use? 'Cause I only have a knife
Sorry, those questions might sound incredibly silly for an expert, but keep in mind I know nothing about it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xofox In reply to arkindal [2012-11-06 13:34:21 +0000 UTC]

Hey, if you've only got one tool you couldn't choose better than a knife. But if you did manage to find someone with a lathe and ten minutes to show you how to turn a wand it'd go fifty times faster.
I have no doubt you could handle it either way. Provided they aren't too curly or outlandishly designed wands aren't too bad. I started off doing wands.

arkindal In reply to xofox [2012-11-07 03:28:23 +0000 UTC]

Can I start doin something similar to your old wands posted here?
They seemed simple enough
And thanks for your reply^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xofox In reply to arkindal [2012-11-07 06:14:22 +0000 UTC]

I don't see why not, I did most of the early ones without a lathe. I used a dremel rotary tool, but I can't think of anything to stop a knife from working, other than time.
